Real-Time Analytics: Techniques to Analyze and Visualize Streaming Data: 9781118837917: Computer Science Books @ desertcart.com Review: A decent review - I hesitated how many stars this book deserved, five or four. The book is a review of some available technologies and methods. It is a decent effort to teach complicated mathematical stuff to software developers, who usually know addition, sometimes subtraction and multiplication, but rarely any math more advanced than that. On the negative side, the author's manner of explaining things is pretty unclear. Whenever he tries to explain complex matters, even though it is hard, he could try better. Review: Helpful and interesting - I have read first 6 chapters of the book and just browsed remaining 5 chapters because at the moment their subject is less interesting for me. My overall impression of the book is quite positive. Probably, I will return to it again and again. Given book presents an architecture for real-time analytics and explains what blocks you need to build it. Then it goes thru more details for each construction block, like data ingestion, real-time processing, and shows what alternative tools you may choose from. Each tool of choice is described in more details. In particular details are given for ZooKeeper, Flume, Kafka, Storm, and Samza. However, certainly one can find more detailed explanation for each of them in their manuals, or in books specifically devoted to those tools. I was surprised that book on real-time analytics even doesn't mention Spark streaming. Explanations are clear and concise. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

I feel good that I know most of them in this book
I am working on a SPARK based real time reporting project, I thought I can learn some new techniques, I feel good that I know most of them in this book. Not really useful to me, but it is a good book if you are not already exposed to the domain.

Well written, comprehensive, and pertinent. A must read.
Clearly explains what technology to use when, where, and why while providing hands on examples that showcase why real-time analytics is increasingly pertinent to this and future generations.

End-to-End Solution that gets you excited about its applications
Brilliant book, well written and easy to understand. Just wish the examples were written in Ruby rather than JAVA but I cant hold that against the author ;).. The book provides a way of solving a problem with an end-to-end solution. Which allows you to understand one way of solving the problem giving you insights into this new area which really get the gears cranking for ideas to potential applications within your own domain. Awaiting Byron' next book with eager anticipation!

Not great.
It's not great, there are better texts out there. I had much better luck choosing a couple of specific technologies and just digging in deep enough to learn the general paradigm.

It is a very useful book. My only suggestion is that the book needs questions at the end of each chapter

Nicely written around tangible and easily understandable examples. Must read for real time analytics beginners
