Who You Are When No One's Looking: Choosing Consistency, Resisting Compromise Paperback – March 25, 2010

This book of small chapters packs a big punch. Like physical therapy, it touches the tight and sore spots and forces you to flex uncomfortable muscles. But the freedom of motion gained by cultivating clear character is worth it. A good read for young people as they formulate their ethics, it also translates powerfully to the world of adults.Most helpful to me was his treatment of the aspects of love, which is the motivation, after all, for our character choices. Very insightful and personable. Please read this book. Just his chapter on "Radical Love: Breaking the Hostility Cycle" is worth the price of the book.

A very good book if you are interested in really looking yourself in the mirror and questioning whether you are the person God wants you to be or are you just pretending? The author challenges you to think about your courage, discipline and character and helps you think about what these really mean and why they are so important, especially in today’s “let’s make everybody happy” society.....

Truly a life changing book - never really had lessons on character from a father figure growing up so to be honest I am diving into topics and conversations I have never really had with anyone. Feels amazing to open up, see sin in my life and see the areas where I thought I was okay but maybe need to work on. True character in America is a lot different than mainstream society pours into us so getting this book and reading through it in a group setting has been monumental in my life. Be sure to get the companion book!

This is the first book by Bill Hybels that I have read; I will definitely be reading more of them. It not only delves into the importance of intentional prayer time, but it goes into specific things to be included in your prayers. He talks about unanswered prayers and reasons prayers are not answered, listening to God and recognizing His promptings. I have never been interested in journaling, but after reading his suggestions, I have begun a journal this new year. I highly recommend this book.

If you have had no change in your life since your salvation, or you are interested in the life and maning of Christianity, this book is for you.

A friend gave me a copy of this about 5 years ago when I was up against some extremely difficult times in my life. This book helped me tremendously. I have since misplaced the book and decided to order a new one because it is my "go-to" book when I need inspiration, motivation and courage. Very well written and not full of a bunch of gag me religious stuff that makes you feel like someone is trying to brainwash you.

Cut me open and reveled me to me soI can change. Can't ask for more in a book. One of the best books I've read and this is my second read of it. Books really do change if you read it again after more personal growth.

I have never been disappointed with a book by Bill Hybels. This latest read is certainly no exception. Hybels addresses eight qualities of Christian character: courage, discipline, vision, endurance, tender love, tough love, sacrificial love, and radical love. He opens and closes his work by stressing the importance of having the character that only Jesus Christ can produce. Hybels is easy-to-read, yet profound in his biblical teachings.I've read many books on Christian character, and this one is among the best.

Very good readWorth it for everyone to study

I read this book in a week. I really found it very hard to put it down once I started. I was reading it in coffee shops waiting for friends, on the train to work in the morning and in my own quiet times. Not only does he have a very engaging style of writing, but his message is one that is essential for anyone trying to lead a meaningful spiritual life. Namely, that we should pay close attention to our character, its different aspects and our behaviours. I will certainly read it again and again, and study some of the scripture he uses to think about how I can continue to develop my understanding and application of this. I thoroughly recommend it to any Christian (or interested person) wanting a good place to reflect on living a better life and who feels called to think more deeply about your character and behaviour.

I really enjoyed this book- it was easy to read and filled with real life examples to drive the points. I have been challenged in my life to become more aware of character and integrity and being aware that i continually need to grow and change in this walk.
