Overall it was pretty easy to set up
I purchased one of these to replace my Windows server machine that died. Overall it was pretty easy to set up, and I have an 8-bay drive tower with USB interface that I connect to this for expanded disk space. It took a little tinkering to figure out how to use the apps, but I was able to set it up to allow all of my recorded videos and music on the diskstation and the external USB drives to be accessible through the dNLA interface on my TVs connected to my home network. It is also pretty easy to map drive folders on the NAS for managing backups from my laptop. The only issue I've had so far is that I purchased some new 4TB drives that I have in another 4-bay drive tower that can support drives greater than 2TB, but the disk station is not able to mount any of the drives in the drive bay when a 4TB drive is present. I don't know if the diskstation can't support a 4TB drive through it's USB interface or if it is some other issue. Unfortunately the Synology tech support doesn't seem to know anything more than how to read what's on their hardware compatibility list. I've contacted them twice about these issues but haven't received any useful help from them. Frankly, I find it hard to understand why they rely so much on a hardware compatibility list these days. Any USB memory device or internal SATA drive that conforms to the interface standards should work. Aside from the issue with drives larger than 2TB, it has worked quite well.

Great NAS
All in all an excellent NAS. This was my first NAS, after having done a lot of research and narrowed the choices down to the equivalent QNAP and this one, I decided to forego the much better technical specs of the QNAP for this Synology simply because of Synology's software reputation. I've been running this NAS non-stop now for a month or so now and it's been great. Setup is fairly straight-forward but does require some research and planning if you want to access the various apps via the internet. The Synology operating system is very impressive. Highly recommend it. I gave it 4 stars due to the price being pretty high compared to the QNAP, and because this particular model does not include hardware transcoding, which is a pain as it requires using handbrake or other software to re-encode many movie files. Also, while they functionally work great, the DS apps for iOS have a very dated look/user interface style. But that is a very minor, design quibble.

Worth Every Penny
If you can afford it, this is the company to go with as far as NAS goes. Their web interface (called "DSM") to the OS is incredible - the best I've seen or used. This is a replacement 1-disk unit for an older DS-107 that I've been using for almost 10 years of constant use (it finally died). I also have a 4-disk model (DS-410) and an 8-disk model (DS-1813+), all of which are on 24/7 and serve a wired/connected household of multiple machines, multiple platforms, multiple uses (video streaming, audio, files, shared steam game library, etc).Synology is definitely not the cheapest solution, and I really wanted to build my own BSD-based box (because I'm that guy), but I cannot deny the quality of the Synology products. Efficiently designed, easy to use, and quick. There are also a lot of 3rd-party applications that one can download and run on them, as well as telnet/ssh'ing right into it (for those who know what they're doing).

Great for security cameras!
This little guy is a work horse. I have it as a primary recording device for two HD IP cameras and it is fantastic. I am also now using it as a web server and an email server. Whats not to love?I am using a WD-RED drive in this box because they are rated for 24/7 use in a NAS, and i felt that was an important factor for using it as a security camera setup. I've already had to go back and review "tapes" to find out who has been letting their dog use my lawn as a toilet. BUSTED.Thanks synology!

Very reliable and faster than the consumer WD variety.
I had been using WD MyClouds but switched to these knowing I needed to upgrade to a more pro-sumer level of NAS. I have this as a back-up to a Synology 216 and they seem faster that MyCloud and while it takes time to get used to the software (slightly less user-friendly that the WD variety), I am now more confident that my "server" data at work can be depended on. I have a small print shop with lots of large graphic file transfers.

Started as a Great product, but horrible tech support from Synolgy after getting bad software updates
I purchased this Disc Station in April and have been happy with it until this week. Now that I have run into an issue with it, I have found out that the support at Synology is very bad! I use the DS for Surveillance only, and use the included Surveillance Station software plus three extra licenses that I had to purchase to get all my cameras working. Last week, the DS and SS both had updates installed automatically and since then the licenses that I purchased are showing as invalid. I have not been able to get anyone on the phone to assist me, they say I have to work through email only, which has meant that I only get 1 reply each day (ie: requesting my invoice, then wait another day). Now they say everything looks ok to them, so they have escalated the issue to their developer in Taiwan. I really wish I could just speak to support on the telephone about my issue so I could get it resolved more quickly. Now I am just waiting for my one email reply tomorrow once the Developer in Taiwan has looked into my issue.

I'm glad I did because the dual core and other specs ...
I own several Synology Disk Stations and am using this one to be a surveillance camera server using Synology's Surveillance Station app. One of my previous Dick Station purchases was a DS-115j which turned out to be greatly under powered and so even though I wanted another single disk unit I was reluctant to get this DS-115. I'm glad I did because the dual core and other specs allows this unit to serve 10 cameras at various resolutions without any problems.

It has worked better than expected
I have and older ds212. It was getting bogged down with my 4 IP cameras and media sharing duties. I didn't want to get a much more expensive unit and go through the hassle of migrating. I bought this to use strictly for Surveillance station. It has worked better than expected. The 4 cameras are running motion detection and CPU usage is around 20-30%. My DS212 now spends most of it's time in standby mode instead of running maxed out 24/7.

good entry NAS
Bought refurbished where it said it had a small scratch. Small apparently meant the width of the scratch because it covers the entire thing. As for the NAS, this is a very entry NASTransfers large files with 2TB WD BLACK 7200rpm is 60MB/s (as in not the full 100MB/s that it was supposed to) over the network which kicks a star off it. There was nothing on the network other than the NAS and the client. Done over LAN with a 5e cable between client and wrt1900ac and 5e cable between wrt1900ac and NAS. Both shown as 1GB which makes sense since it's above the 30MB/s which fast ethernet does.Again, good entry NAS.

Great reliable server
This is the third synology server I have bought. This one was for my parents since they needed a device that could sit under the desk and never need touching, allowing it to quietly and reliably backup important files.I have never had any problems with synology NAS servers. They work and don't require messing with.

This is a MUST HAVE product!
Best buy ever!Using it as IP cam surveillance station: Great!Using it as Media Server UPnP, DLNA, (inc. Plex with no transcoding as the processor is not capable): All great!Using it as File Server: Really fast.Using it as SSH Server: Tricky to configure with certificates and users but very nice and stable.Constant updatesThe only place where the score is down is the Administration Panel that is kind slow and not so responsive sometimes.

Quiet and surprisingly quick
For an entry level NAS, I'm very impressed by the performance of this little unit. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to win any speed awards (I also have a DS1515+ and that is very nice) but its a nice little unit. Runs everything I can throw at it, and remarkably quiet.
