MTM AC50C-11 50-Caliber Ammo Can, Forest Green

Very nice and heavy duty ammo can. I use this box to hold 1000 rounds or AR15 ammo and it does the job quite well with a little space left over. At first I was unsure how durable this box would be but found it very heavy duty. It also includes a gasket in the lid so that when you close the box it becomes water proof. I have stacked these ammo boxes 4 high and they top and bottom corners of the case enable them to almost lock into each other to help them from sliding around. There is also a place to install 2 padlocks on the box in the front on the right and left side. Not too sure why one would lock a plastic box because a criminal would rather take it than empty it, maybe to keep little hands a little bit at bay. The handle has a nice and easy grip to it. You hand will not get sore carrying this box a little distance. PROS: - Heavy Duty plastic - Holds ample amounts of ammo or other items - Has rubber gasket seal on the bottom side of the lid in a grooved track to prevent water penetration - Strong double snapping clasp on front - Strong hinge system - Will accept 2 padlocks on front right/left - Comfortable handle that can take the weight of the contents - Top and bottom has notches/raise areas that allows slip-proof stacking - Have stacked 4 filled cans without damage (better to limit at 3 as 4 starts to feel unstable) CONS: - Item price appears to have gone up with popularity

Solid box, good O ring seal, stackable. I was surprised by the reviews with negative remarks concerning the sturdy-ness of these boxes. I just got mine today, and promptly loaded them up with a mixture of .308, 30-30, and .45 ammo until they were full. Snapped them closed and lugged them around the garage a bit. Result? No problems, no "give" with the lid or handle, no bulging on sides or bottom. Look, these aren't metal ammo cans - that's the point. If you want an ammo can that you can chuck around in the trenches of WWI, then yeah, get the metal ones. If you want a solid, dependable ammo can for short/long term storage, or for casual forays to the range or wilderness, these will do very nicely, and guess what? Plastic doesn't rust. Doesn't make as much noise, either. I like metal ammo cans as much as the next guy. Still use them for many applications, particularly black powder. But these are nice alternatives and if your storage area gets wet on the floor (broken water heater, overflowing drip pan, Wrath-of-God hurricane/flood) you won't have to wire brush and re-paint these like you might need to with metal cans. Good buy at a reasonable price.

Got my first 50 box 10 years ago and still going strong, a little banged up but nothing broke. Holds 1000 rds. of 5.56 with room to spare and lighter than the metal 50 cal boxes. Will the metal outlast the plastic, yes but this MTM box should be around for several decades of normal use.

After ordering 4 of these, I then read some of the negative reviews and started to get a little concerned. Re-reading the description, I see they are rated for 30 lbs. Loading them up with ammo, 16 boxes (800 rounds) of 38 special weighs in at 27 lbs. 357 Magnum at 29.6 lbs. 44 magnum 39 lbs. 30-30, well I'm 2 boxes shy of full, but it's much lighter than the others and I didn't bother weighing it. Bottom line, those filling it with 45ACP will exceed the weight rating just like my 44 magnum. Although it feels heavy, I am able to pick it up and the handle hasn't fallen off yet. I expect to order some more. I also think it might be pushing it loading it up with 22LR as those boxes pack a lot in a box, not as much empty space between rounds. I think it's a good product for the price, but if you exceed the 30 lb weight limit, you might want to consider carrying it with 2 hands under the bottom and not by the handle, or stick with buying the real military surplus metal cans.

First, these are made in the USA so anytime you can buy a great quality product that supports a company in the US, that's something you may want to consider. I'm very impressed with the quality. The can is sturdy and well built. The handle is nice and easy to hold. Has a solid, comfortable feel to the handle and there is no wobble either. You have the feeling this can will handle pretty heavy loads. The can itself seals up very nice and the latches have a nice solid sound and feel when you latch them. The product came exactly as described with no flaws or shipping issues. The ammo can is advertised as a 50 caliber ammo can but it's useful for storing any sort of ammo or other gear that you want. The inside dimensions of the can are 5.8"(L) x 11"(W) x 7.2"(H). The top of the can is stackable and I intend to buy a couple more of these cans soon. I've owned the metal, original 50 cal military cans but these are much nicer. And they won't rust like metal ones. There is also a double padlock option on these so you can lock them on both sides. The o-ring seal is nice and feels like it would do a decent job of holding water out although it states water resistant only. Basically it looks and feels like it should cost more. A quality product with nice features like stackable, double padlock, o-ring seal, sturdy handle, and thick wall plastic construction. All made in the USA. What's not to like.

I have several of these holding ammunition snugly for the zombie apocalypse, but that isn't why I bought this particular order. It turns out that the secure and sturdy construction, the lockable top and moderate size have another function. You see, i have a teenage son, and he tends to eat anything that isn't nailed down... or locked up. For Christmas I came up with the idea that we would all have our own food safe. The only thing that is safe is something small enough to be locked up in this box. So if I have some cookies I bought for myself, I can lock them away knowing that they will be there when I need them most! These fit in our kitchen cabinets perfectly (and also stacked up in the closet... zombies never look there). You can get fancier containers, but not at this price. Please note that these are not air/water tight, but you can put two padlocks on them in case you have one of those "The only way we can both have the gold is if one of us has both keys" types of situations going on. Just try and put out of your mind that you could probably back over this thing with a pickup and get all the gold without murdering the other person for their key.

Read the product description. It says, "Military Style." "Military Style" does not mean "Mil-Spec" and probably never will. A plastic water pistol that looks like a Beretta M9 could be called, "Military Style" but I sure wouldn't want to go into combat with one. First off, this is not an ammo can. I'm an old NamVet and have a collection of steel military issue ammo cans of all sizes which are available at military surplus stores and many outdoor stores for about the same price. Granted, this container will hold ammo. So will a shoe box. However, I sure wouldn't want any ammo stored in a plastic box subjected to excessive shock or heat. I suppose these plastic boxes would be okay to store ammo in a cool dry place. And putting a lock on a plastic box keeps the contents about as safe as putting lipstick on a pig keeps the pig from turning into bacon and BBQ. Having said all this, after ordering my first "Military Style" storage box, I've since ordered several more. I'm finding endless uses for them. They are great for Dremels and accessories and all sorts of tools. I use them for mobile sharpening tools, first-aid kits, utility boxes mounted on mowers and tractors and for all sorts of specialized kits. They are great for organizing hobby items. I use them for small emergency kits in the trunks of vehicles with Fix-a-Flat, tire repair, lights and an assortment of other items only to mention a few. The smooth surface is excellent for attaching labels and even color coding. Similar boxes with only one latch have been around for years. When the latch breaks, your stuff is spread all over creation. I've had it happen more than once. That's not likely to happen with these MTM boxes which have double latches. Use whatever you feel comfortable using for whatever purpose. Just be safe.

I have to mention that this MTM ammo can is very good quality and a great size. The side walls are fairly straight which gives decent usable internal dimensions. I once bought a Plano at a similar size and the side walls were so weak that the top was a struggle to line up when you closed it, it had too much flex and also less internal usable dimensions. I do not see that being an issue at all with this new MTM! Looking at the carry handle, it is the only point of weakness. The way it was designed it clicks (locks) itself to the lid from the side and my feeling is with enough weight and a jolt it might come out. To explain, If you look at the picture you will see the handle can pivot only 90 degrees from the recessed area that it nests in and into the upright position. Well maybe 95 degrees if your lucky... Point being when you use the carry handle as your walking the case is being thrown side to side a little and considering the carry handle wont go past the 90-95 degree mark it jams against the lid. The way the design is the pressure created when it jams pushes the handle in the direction that could push it out of the click/lock. I have 22 pounds in this case right now and with the leverage and weight I wondered how close it might have been to letting go. I shook the case side to side with the weight in it and it was ok and never let go so this is not an issue handle feels sturdy and it means this MTM is built very well. It just could have been designed better to be completely solid and not putting leverage pressures in the areas that could cause a failure in more extreme conditions. Still a 5 star product for sure!
