How far away can the Quad travel from the controller? How do you know when it is going out of range?

I wish I knew.  They advertise that it has a range of 50 meters, which is does.  I know I have (had) mine several hundred meters away and was able to control it.  I would recommend anyone practice at low altitudes first to master the flight characteristics.  Especially ensure you learn to control it as you rotate it.  Once it get up high if you loose orientation, you are done.  That is how I lost mine, actually it was letting my 9 year old take it for a spin.  Several hundred meters away and probably 150 meters high, with a bit of wind.......Pooof gone!!!  I have acquired another and will be a little smarter about how I fly it about.  I will probably test the range on the ground by walking a long ways away and seeing when it starts to take commands.  Notes: buy the higher capacity batteries and look at the YouTube videos on antenna modifications for greater range may be worth a look, the good thing is that I now have two controllers I'll experiment with one.  The camera is really pretty good (I was surprised).  I intend to use mine replacement one to look at the condition of my second story rain gutters for blockages before the rainy season arrives (I hate ladders).  I am also going to use it to make some aerial film making to supplement my ground view films.  Low budget indeed but what the heck.  This is a good entry level model, think of it as a trainer before you go high performance.  Once I master I'll upgrade until I get to one that accommodates a GoPro.  Please do the right thing with these toys so they don't get regulated.  keep them low enough to not interfere with commercial/general aviation and no snooping on the neighbors (think of your privacy!), etc.  Happy flying!

How long does the battery last?

Battery life on the syma x5c is about 7-8 minutes. Not very good. Charge time is about 75 minutes.
