Advertising executive Charles Schine is just another Chicago commuter who regularly catches the 8:43 A.M. train to work. But the one day he misses his train and meets Lucinda Harris, his life is changed forever. Lucinda is charming, beautiful and seductive. Despite the fact that each are married with children, their attraction to one another is magnetic. Lunch dates quickly become cocktails after work, and before long, Charles and Lucinda's infatuation leads them to a hotel room. Their seemingly perfect affair goes terribly awry when LaRoche, a brutal stranger, breaks into their room and holds them at gunpoint. This once illicit liaison turns into a nightmare more dangerous and violent than either could have ever imagined. Charles' life soon becomes filled with deception, blackmail, violence and crime. Unable to confide in his wife or speak to the police, Charles finds himself trapped in a world he doesn't recognize, with no trace of the life he once knew.

One of Aniston's better performances
This would almost be a pure film noir if not for the rather tidy last scene. Otherwise this movie a very well done mystery suspense story buoyed by a solid cast. It kept me on the edge of my seat, even on a second viewing. I originally saw DERAILED when released in theaters way back in 05. However, I don't think it was a huge box office success. I suspect many Aniston fans didn't like her as a Femme Fatale. I thought she was perfect. Also Kudos to Clive Owen, and especially Vincent Casselle who plays one hell of a convincing bad assed villain.

yuck
Man with sick daughter and over stressed wife lives in Chicago suburb. For no reason he has an affair (or attempts to) with a stranger on a train. They are commuters in Chicago. Some crazy man breaks in on them in the hotel room and violence ensues. Then the man gets black mailed for money. Then more money. Then twists and turns to the plot happen. This movie is gross. I remember watching this in the theatre. I got up and walked out when the Aniston character said she had an abortion after being raped in the hotel room by the attacker/blackmailer.When you think this movie is over it isn't. Then when you really think it is over you find out who at the very beginning is writting the story of what happened in the movie from prison. Then it ends. But this movie is a gritty gross film that leaves you feeling icky. The violence is bad. People getting shot in the head, people stabbing, rapes, blood everywhere, abortion, it is just a awful story line. What gets me is the the black detective cop says "The police didn't give so and so (the black mail cart guy in the man's office) a chance." He is referring to a guy that went to prison for selling and doing drugs. A man who stabbed a guy while in prison. And a why who got out and miraculously got a job and then stole some computers. He goes on in this film to do other stuff too. But he is a "victim". WTH?Anything made by the "Weinstein" brothers is just a gross culturally offensive mess.

any film with Clive Owen can't be bad. This is a gripping thriller with several twists ...
Jennifer Aniston is outstanding in this movie and, let's face it, any film with Clive Owen can't be bad. This is a gripping thriller with several twists and turns. Do yourself a favor - get a bunch of nibblkes and something to drink, and settle in for some pretty decent viewing.

Keeps you on the edge of your seat
I totally agree with another reviewer here about not listening to critics reviews. Afterall, they told me Perfume, Story of a Murderer was good and it was one of the most dismal films I have ever seen. Derailed on the other hand, is not.Charles Schine is a tired Ad executive, who's marriage is in a rut and their only child in desperate need of expensive medication. On his daily commute, Charles meets Lucinda and soon begins to consider having an affair with her. This leads to violence and blackmail.I don't want to give anything more away, but I found the story line original and, at times, truely frightening. Jennifer Anniston is excellent, as is Clive Owen. The added plot twists only add to the film. One of the best thrillers I have seen- well worth a watch.
