This radio-controlled clock is synchronized with the time of the US Atomic Clock and changes to standard time/daylight saving time automatically. Once set up, you can have your main unit display time, date, or indoor and outdoor temperatures on a large backlit LED screen. The press of a button lets you scroll through displays. Pressing yet another button causes the current information to be read aloud by a pleasant female voice. Or, set this clock for automatic vocal announcements of time and temperature from 8:00am to 10:00pm. This is a great clock for people who are blind or those with low vision. Hear the time, date, indoor temperature and outdoor temperature read out to you whenever you like. The main unit uses 2 AA batteries, and the wireless remote requires 2 AAA batteries (not included). Weight: 1.24 ounces. Size: 8-1/4 wide x 5 high x 2 deep. Wireless remote measures: 3 x 2-1/2 Please note: The atomic function will not operate in Hawaii or Alaska. This item cannot communicate with the National Institute of Standards and Technology from either Hawaii or Alaska and therefore must always be set manually while in those states.

It seems to have come with Bad Outdoor Sending Unit!
Just purchased our third one of these clocks in the last 8 years or so. The first one (years ago) did not work at first so they replaced it. I believe it was purchased directly from Maxi-Aids. Then the replacement system ran for about 6 years before the outdoor transmitter died. The second system purchased two years ago, worked right off and has been solid. The third one we just purchased for my mother-in-law who does not see or understand things as easily as she used to. UNFORTUNATELY THE OUTSIDE THERMOMETER/TRANSMITTER DOES NOT WORK! DOA. The transmitter light blinks, but the receiver does not lock on the thermometer that came with it. The new receiver/display can read our older outside unit just fine as does the original receiver from 8 years ago.Amazon is contacting Maxi-Aids about our most recent non-working thermometer. Hopefully it will be on its way back to them, soon. I will try to remember and leave an update here. Hopefully a replacement will work and last six years like our first replacement transmitter. One down side of these units is the outdoor AAA batteries do not last very long, especially in cold weather. Three or four months is all you get with Energizer Alkaline. We started using Lithium AAA batteries, and get six months now, which is worth it because of the hassle. You need a very small Philips screwdriver (# 0 works) to open the transmitter with four screws. The receiver needs to be reset and put on the right time zone every time you change the transmitter batteries. When working, this is a very nice system. Despite the Dead on Arrival problem, I could not bring myself to give this equipment three stars, it is just so good when it gets rolling:o)Like any outdoor thermometer, placement of the transmitter is critical. It is amazing how much sun shines on the north side of a building!Note: The Transmitter has to be on Channel 1, the other two don't do anything.

My mother so enjoys this!
My visually impaired mother so enjoys her talking clock. I put a raised sticky button tab on the bar she presses to get it to talk because she couldn't see to know where to push. That fixed that problem and now she checks the time and temperature several times a day! Great product!

I would highly recommend this clock
I would highly recommend this clock!! The only problem is I only needed the sensor but had to buy another clock to get that part. Other than that it is an awesome item for anyone with vision problems!!!

terrible fuzzy speaker; can't understand it, bad for blind
Can't understand voice, fuzzy, volume not very helpful. Also difficult for sighted to read numbers. One of the worst products we have tried.

Disappointed - it has issues not in description
I purchased this atomic clock specifically because it audibly announces the hour...Issues:(A) Since it doesn't update until the early hours of the morning, I decided to manually set it synchronizing it with the atomic clock I was replacing it with (because this one announces the time on the hour and mine doesn't) it is a very clumsy design where you have to blindly manipulate BOTH the front AND back buttons while watching the front display to set the year time months zones etc.(B) When I finally got it set I discovered another feature I very much didn't like: Instead of saying 3:45PM it says "15 minutes til 4PM" and instead of 3:15PM it says "15 minutes past 3PM: with no way of altering the announcement to what I'm used to here in the U.S..(C) Despite what I thought were speaker holes at the front due the misleading picture showing them, the speaker is in the rear, making it useless in my shelving unit between books, where its predecessor lived, unless I turn it around backwards with the display facing away and speaker facing out, and there is no way to increase the volume. I purchased this for the announcement on the hour(D) As I work late hours, I specifically asked and was told by a few that there was a setting that permitted it to announce the hour 24 hours a day instead of the noted from 8AM - 10PM. There is no such setting which makes this clock nearly useless to me.------I was looking for an "Atomic" clock that announced the hour every hour/24 hrs and apparently no one makes such a thing, and this one is the only "atomic" one that announces it at all.I feel misled about the speaker placement, but I'll keep this for a while in an attempt to get used to it, and in a few weeks if it doesn't meet my needs, I'll send it back.
