Does what they're supposed to!
I use these in a kitty water fountain and they do a good job. I just put tap water in the fountain - the kitties like it, and the little pump is still going strong after 3 or so years. I'm slightly concerned that they've added a ridge on the back, which will allow more water through without being filtered. This is a recent change.

They work, but almost too well.
So I have a love hate relationship with these filters. I feel like they do a fantastic job at filtering the water, but it is almost too good. After just 4 days of having a new one in the fountain, the water returned to a trickle. I don't feel like replacing these filters on a weekly or less basis. I use store bought filtered water for the fountain anyhow, so after using one box (4 filters) of these I just removed the filter all together and the fountain now runs beautifully without the water trickling. Also, if you really want to use these, pay attention to how they look when you are cleaning your fountain. Refer to the first picture. The filter on the left is one that was used for approximately 7 to 10 days. The filter on the right is a brand new one that I had just rinsed out for a few minutes. If your filter looks black, like the one on the left, CHANGE IT!! This is why the water in your fountain will return to a trickle. The instructions don't lie when they say the filter needs to be replaced on a weekly to biweekly basis depending on the animals using the fountain. Follow them and you will Love it!

They're OK.
I'm on my third Drinkwell fountain. First I had the lotus, which didn't use the carbon filter - just the foam pre-filter. After that cracked, I moved to the Avalon fountain. One of my cats ran into that (running from another cat) and broke it, so I'm on my second Avalon.I've found I don't notice much difference with the carbon filter. I don't actually drink the water so I don't notice if there is a quality difference or not, but it doesn't really filter any materials, just the taste of the water. What I do notice is that the carbon filters are the ones I go through quickly. I will usually put the foam filter into the dishwasher. That lets me get 2-4 weeks worth of use out of it. I can't do that with the carbon filter, so I get 1 to 2 weeks with it, and then it has to be tossed.I've found that mine get slimy after about 10 days or so, and then there is a noticeable reduction in the flow of the water pressure.I give them 5 stars because it doesn't matter where I get these from, they're still going to get slimy after a while. I could just run the fountain without this filter, but with four cats, I would like to keep the water as clean as possible.I don't like having to pay for them as often as I do, but they're cheaper here than at the store.

The real deal
I was worried that these were some kind of knock-off, but they are the same exact 2-pack Drinkwell filters I've bought at Petsmart. Sometimes they come shipped in the the same box that you buy them in at the store, but usually they've been taken out of the boxes and shipped with 2 filters in the same plastic baggie that they normally come packed inside the box - probably to save space and weight. The baggie and filters all have the same markings as the store bought ones.Gave it 4 stars not because of the vendor, but because Drinkwell really should find a more environmentally friendly filter design and eliminate the plastic. It would also be nice if they lasted more than a week before they get slimed up with bacteria, but overall the all-ceramic fountain that I have works well, as long as you're fairly thorough with your weekly cleaning. I have it down to a science - takes me about 12 minutes to clean the ceramic parts, the plastic filter holder, and inside the disassembled pump with some Q-tips and alchohol.

Requires Some Home Owner Trial And Error To Work As Advertised
The second half of my Pagoda Tower cat re-hydrator. Out of the two orders that I've made, these are supposed to last for two weeks but I've only had three filters do that. The balance of the filters were good for only 5 to 8 days out of the two week use period. I found that the filters were drastically reducing the volume of water flowing out the tower discharge. Upon closer examination, I found that I had to disassemble the filter housing, remove the filter, and back flush it under the kitchen faucet. Nothing came out, but the full flow resumed. Upon removing the smaller filter cloth on the discharge side, I found that the offending culprit was that the filter was packed with enlarged finials and they just stopped up the flow until back flushed. it'd be nice if the OEM would include more expensive beads of activated charcoal instead of those large finials. I've also found that if you soak this filter in a container of cool water while you're performing the bi-monthly cleaning, and then rinse it in the direction of flow for at least 5 minutes, you'll remove twice as much carbon dust than if you just flush it as the directions state.

Nice being able to buy these in bulk - usually I get a month or so from each, so this is like a year supply
While I wish they made a re-usable filter, these are branded filters which fit the Drinkwell fountains (I have the Pagoda). It's nice being able to buy them on here in larger quantities and at a somewhat reasonable price. When I get these I rinse them with water and run some water through them in both directions to clear some of the loose charcoal. Then each time that I wash the fountain I do the same thing again to rinse these out. Usually I can do that a couple times before I feel like they're dirty and should be replaced. Typically that's at least a month. Only in one case so far have I had one filter that would repeatedly plug up and slow the fountain - each time I rinsed it, it would get better for a bit before plugging up again. That one didn't last quite as long.

Works but not necessary
Although these work, they plug so fast we now don't use any charcoal filters. Instead, we change the water every couple of days.
