Magnifying Glass with Leather Case (Dark Havana)(SL815DH)

The media could not be loaded.  I own a number of these fold out type of pocket magnifiers. Most have a plastic case, plastic frame and usually plastic, although sometimes a glass lens, and all lie about their magnification. This Galco offering is different. The case is leather, the frame is metal the lens is glass and it gives an honest 3X power spec in the product information. It is very good, I can’t find a better one. Now keep in mind I bought mine about 4 years ago, around summer of 2017. If you look at mine in the video you can see the edges of the leather are treated and polished, not just left raw. There is also a stamping detail that goes around the edges where the glass enters and the whole thing has a smooth and treated surface. When I look at the photo of the magnifier on the page now, it does not appear to have these extra details anymore. To me, the leather looks quite untreated, the edges are not polished or stained and are not stamped or detailed. I am not sure it is still worth the premium price tag, but it sure was at one time.

I bought this to replace an antique pocket magnifier that I carried for decades (and recently lost). I also purchased a much less expensive one - LeBeila 8X Pocket Folding Magnifier. The Galco magnifier has a glass lens, metal retaining ring, metal rivet and real leather case. Fresh out of the package the magnifier stays out without flopping around. This may change if the rivet loosens. The leather is stitched on one side to help keep the magnifier in the case. The lens is very clear and has excellent magnification. Though it is rated as 3X magnification it is stronger than the 8X LeBeila. Looking at a page of text the Galco magnified text is clearly larger. The LeBeila is inexpensive but at the cost of quality. The "leather" case appears to be vinyl, the retaining ring is plastic and the lens isn't as clear. If you want a quality magnifier for constant use get the Galco. If you want an affordable one or a spare (I plan on keeping mine in my vehicle) get the LeBeila.

Beautiful quality of glass (no plastic!) lens, no aberration, the glass is perfectly clear :) I like that this glass comes with a snugly fitting sheath, despite its sie it isn't bulky and is very portable. I bought it to study rocks and small objects. 46 USD is a high price, but this lens is worth it.

This is a quality glass for sure. The glass is very clear and crisp and NO distortion. It is put in the leatherwrap securely and will protect the glass from scratches. Carries good in the pocket. It is the rightmagnification for about anything that you need to look at. My only aggravation is, it is way overpricedand is no way worth 40 dollars. However, nobody made me buy it, I did that own my own. If youwant something, you have to pay what is asked when you don't have many choices. Good glass...

Use at home and outdoors for small print and readings on film camera controls. Quality glass lens. 3X just right power, easy to focus but still strong enough. Stiff in & out of pouch but not major issue. Be nice if it had hole or loop for lanyard but again no big problem- - - attached stick-um type lens lanyard. Works fine. Very pleased.

This is a professional grade pocket magnifier. The magnification is perfect for my use. The leather is superior to any wallet I have owned. I have heard comments like “wow” and “Where did you get that!” The quality is really value for money. I equate it with a fine fountain pen or quality watch. Something you can use daily while wearing a suit or out doors while hiking, hunting or camping.

Galco's magnifying glass is something I would expect Orvis to sell. It is of the highest quality glass & fantastic leather. The metal retainer around the glass lens is smooth. The leather is aging wonderfully.Having now carried this for about a year, everyday in my pocket at home & work it's all first rate design & quality. I am never embarrassed to pull out the Galco glass. Every time I use it, the snickers stop and then work mates & friends want to see it.It may seem a little pricey, however your going to have this for life & pass it down to your kids.Thank you Galco!

The glass is very clear, makes a nice focal point for reading fine print or fire starting. The only complaint I have is the rivet that holds the metal frame into the leather care -- it is really, really tight. But I presume it will loosen up with use. Also, if I were the one designing it, I would have used a rivet with a hole through it (like a grommet) so you could pass a neck lanyard through it. On the whole, it's a great product, and I am pleased with it.
