I'm very pleased with my choice
Loosely described as a gadget, Degen DE 1131 is actually lot more than one would expect from a little portable radio! Without getting into technical details, form the practical point of view, I could vouch that everything mentioned in the product description, is accurate! Now that I own one, I'm very pleased with my choice. From its looks and functionality, to the technology involved in making it , Degen DE 1131 exceeds the expectations. What really set this product apart is the fairly large build in memory along with a micro SD card port. The battery life is above average. No disappointment on the radio's functions either! Don't expect to get the whole world at your ears, but the short wave available range brings to you more than a few radio stations. Here, on the West Coast, I could listen to stations from Australia, or across country as far as Cuba! On the AM/AF mode you will get a rich sound, and the stations lock in perfectly.Like with any other product, it always comes down to our own choices. Bottom line is that Dengen DE 1131 is worth the price. I've purchased this radio intrigued by it's complex functions, and for the looks. And if the operation manual doesn't look comprehensive enough for you, Degen's customer technical support group is available 24/7 , polite and very knowledgeable . I used their service myself!

Has the potential to be great, but needs major redesign.....
This radio/mp3 player has a lot of good things about it, but the bad things far outweigh the good.I'll start with the good:The speaker sound is great for a unit this small. FM reception is fantastic. The ability to play am/fm/sw/mp3 is great, as is the ability to record. The fact that it can take a memory card is what sets it apart from other units. The integration of the card port was the major selling point for me (32GB max). Now the bad:The charging/data cable connection is loose and unstable on the radio. AM reception is mediocre. The battery only lasts about 12 hours at moderate speaker volumes (longer if you use headphones, or low speaker volumes). There is no wall charger, rechargeable battery charges only through USB ports. You can't use the radio while it is charging, as the manual claims that doing so can damage your computer's USB ports. There is no practical way to fast forward or rewind mp3's. The touch sensors are not backlit, so adjusting the radio in dim light is impossible. The unit feels very light, plastic-y, and cheap. But, by far the worst thing is the touch sensor controls. The sensors are terrible. It often takes me 30 seconds to do a simple volume adjustment. You can hit a sensor 5 times and it might only register one touch (if you are lucky). Sometimes I will tap away at the "volume up" button and when I can finally get the touch sensors to respond the volume will actually turn down a notch. Or I'll hit "volume down" and when it finally responds the volume might actually increase a notch. Other times it might not respond at all. Often times it is so slow to respond that it will automatically flip itself out of volume adjustment mode while I am still trying to make volume adjustments. By the time it finally responds to my repeated taps it will often have returned to radio mode, which results in it unintentionally changing my radio station. You get the same inaccuracies and poor touch responses when you change radio stations, navigate mp3's, shuffle through the menu, etc.. The touch sensors are just an inaccurate, unresponsive mess that make this radio a total pain to operate. Sadly, it was completely unnecessary to design this unit with touch sensors. Had Degen simply kept all of the functions the same, but used regular old buttons instead of touch sensors, this radio would be lightyears better. These horrible touch sensors were not perfected at the time of manufacture, and they essentially ruin the radio if you want to make quick adjustments.

Worthless piece of junk
Very difficult to operate with the touch panel, so I didn't use it, maybe a hour. Last month I got it out and charged the battery and while I verified the battery was good, the device would not function, the green panel light very bright, but no function. I tried every switch combination to reset the microprocessor, but still not functioning. Total waste of $70 now I can't return to amazon so it is total trash can time.Sorry I bought it.
