Are these things magnetic or grippy, or do they just slide around a ton?

The tiles are not magnetic. They are laminated, however, and the friction between this and most maps, including the 1985 Games Battle Maps, keeps them from moving around too much. If you are concerned, a little bit of blue mounting tack is the perfect accessory to keep everything in place.
