An Excellent Knife (Especially for the Price)
I work as a hiking guide in the rainforest and a good knife is an important tool of the trade. I ordered these because I was curious if they were anywhere near as good as the usuall $30 to $40 knifes I use. Turns out, they are.I've been using the knife about 2 weeks and the blade is still sharp. By the way, these knives come sharpened from the factory and they get them razor sharp. Much sharper than one usually finds on a brand new knife.By the way, I recommend this model that comes with a stainless steel blade. Perhaps the carbon steel blade can hold an edge a little better, I don't know. What I do know is that the stainless steel hold an edge just fine, and has the added benefit of not rusting. (I have this knife with both blade types and my carbon steel blade began to rust after a few months. The stainless blade remains flawless.)The grip is comfortable and textured to prevent slipping and overall the knife has a good look to it. The sheath is perfect, the knife slides right in and locks in place with no fear of it working its way out on its own. The sheath has a clip on the back which I find a lot more useful than a belt loop since I am not always wearing a belt.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cheap but well made knife.

Mora TopQ Knive: Excellent For A Knife/Fire Starter Combo With A FireSteel & Ideal Tinder Suggested (Magnesium Block Optional)
I bought two of these Mora TopQ knives from Amazon and am very impressed by their quality for such a low price.Firstly, the 12C27 stainless steel holds its edge very well, and I have not observed any oxidation in the blades over 6 months even though I live in the very hot and humid tropics. By contrast, my knives made of high (1075 and 1095) carbon steel show alot of oxidation even when cared for using oil treatments. Of course you should still periodically sharpen the Mora TopQ stainless steel knives and treat them with mineral oil and WD-40.If you want to use the knife blade to strike the fire steel, merely file the spine of the knife flat so that you get 90 degree angles on the sides (rather than the rounded edges which is how it is supplied) so that you can get it to produce great sparks from the fire steel (see below). The handle of this knife is super non-slip and is thus a pleasure to use; it feels perfect in your hand. The only disappointment is the lack of a full tang (metal from the blade extending to the end of the handle, but for the very modest price of $ 13.00 I really cannot complain. Thus, you should not bash this knife through small logs lengthways to prepare pieces of firewood, as you can do using a full tang knife (see reviews on relatively inexpensive Remington Sportsman camo 440 stainless steel knives or the MTECH 440C stainless steel survival knives for that purpose). For making fires I use the very inexpensive Alpha Encender combo of a large 12,000 strike ferrosteel rod, a large magnesium metal block (shavings will also start fires in very wet conditions, a large metal striker all combined with a paracord lanyard for ONLY $ 11.00! WOW, no wonder it gets such a great reviewer rating!: Fire Starter - "Alpha Encender" Fire Starter with Magnesium Rod By Aspen Ridge Sports, Used for Emergency Fire Starter Like Firesteel, Aurora Fire Starter, Bear Grylls Firestarter Good for 12,000 Strike Some READERS may prefer the stainless steel Companion Mora knives (approximately $ 15.00) which come in multiple colored sheaths and handles which I rate with 4-5 stars. Morakniv Companion Fixed Blade Outdoor Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade, 4.1-Inch I do not however recommend the `Light My Fire' series of Mora knives since the firesteel is too thin and short for much use, fiddly for mens' hands, and also because it is inserted into the handle of the knife the tang-length is only maximum 1/2 the length of the handle and the combination of knife and a very small (3,000 strike) firesteel is too expensive ($ 27.00) and the small firesteel is too expensive to replace at the price of $ 12.00! Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife with 9.5 cm (3.75 Inch) Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade and Swedish FireSteel Fire Starter Light My Fire Replacement Swedish FireSteel Fire Starter for FireKnife I therefore combine the Mora TopQ (or Mora 748 5.65 inch blade length) stainless steel knives (see below) with fire starting items (see below). Morakniv Allround 748MG Fixed Blade Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade For lighting the fires I suggest that people buy the Red or Black Light My Fire 2.0 Army Firesteel which is stated to be suitable for 12,000 strikes, has received a 4.7 star rating from 834 Amazon customers, and only costs $ 14.19! Light My Fire Original Swedish FireSteel Army 12,000 Strike Fire Starter Alternatively, I have also opted to use a pure magnesium block with built-in firesteel stri)p made by DOAN (N.B.Caution: There are many fake magnesium blocks which do not work like the genuine DOAN or The Friendly Sweede blocks) which only costs $ 9.00 and can start many, many fires. You can scrape off a small pile of the magnesium metal from this block USING THE BACK EDGE OF THE KNIFE BLADE (NOT THE SHARP EDGE!!!) SINCE PURE MAGNESIUM IS A RELATIVELY SOFT METAL, AND THEN USING THE SAME BACK EDGE OF THE KNIFE BLADE STRIKE SPARKS FROM THE BUILT-IN FIRESTEEL TO THE MAGNESIUM SHAVINGS. This is easy to perform with very little practice.IMPORTANT LATEST TESTS TO SHOW THAT THE MORA CRAFTLINE TOPQ KNIFE IS THE BEST FOR USE IN A FIRE-STARTING COMBO:Latest UpDate (13th December 2014):The Light My Fire Special Knife and 3.000 strike Firesteel is really meant for preparing tinder and lighting fires, that's all! I directly compared three Mora Light My Fire 3.8" blade, Mora 748 TQ 4.1" blade, and Mora All round 5.8" stainless steel knives for their use in fire starters. Morakniv Craftline TopQ Allround Fixed Blade Utility Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade, 4.1-Inch Morakniv Allround 748MG Fixed Blade Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade Importantly, the alternative fire starting (larger firesteel with more strikes (12,000) and magnesium block from The Friendly Swede) materials (or the Alpha Encender combo: see above) I suggested in my earlier review come with the strikers/scrapers so you don't even need to use a knife! Light My Fire Original Swedish FireSteel Army 12,000 Strike Fire Starter The Friendly Swede Magnesium Emergency Fire Starter Blocks (3 Pack), Black Comments on my recent tests:Light My Fire knife/firesteel versus the other Mora knives and Fire Starting Materials:The steel of all three knives has shown no oxidation after being in very highly humid tropical conditions for 1-2 years, but the resistance of the Mora TopQ knife sharp edge showed the greatest resistance to abuse (see below)! The Light My Fire knife has the shortest (9.4 cm) and wide blade (1.6 cm), while the Mora TopQ blade is 10.0 cm long and 1.9 cm wide, and the Mora 5.8" Allround knife blade is 14.6 cm long and 2.1 cm wide. The back edge of the Light My Fire knife is flat and at 90o to the front and back blade faces so it is very easy to use is to both make sparks from the firesteel, and make shavings from the magnesium block. By contrast, the other two knives have more a flat back edge but with a slightly round edge to the blade faces. Thus, if you want to use the back of these other knives for these purposes, I easily flattened and slightly roughened their back edges using the flat face of a diamond knife sharpener, and they then perform these tasks as well as the other knife. You can also use the sharp edge of the these knives to both create sparks from the firesteel, and shavings from the magnesium blocks particularly when you push the blade away over their faces at an angle of approximately 20-30 degrees. For this purpose, I used the part of their blades very close to their handles and the best performer and with less damage to the blade was the Mora TopQ knife which I assume is due to its top quality stainless steel (TopQ) .IMPORTANTLY, THEREFORE THE LIGHT MY FIRE COMBO KNIFE AND FIRESTEEL IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY AND YOU CAN GET A MUCH BETTER KNIFE (BETTER STEEL E.G. Mora TopQ) FOR MAKING TINDER AND KINDLING STICKS AND MERELY BUY A LARGER AND BETTER FIRESTEEL WITH ITS OWN REALLY EFFICIENT STRIKER FROM LIGHT MY FIRE FOR APPROXIMATELY THE SAME PRICE.THUS, FOR APPROXIMATELY THE SAME PRICE GIVE ME THE MORA TOPQ KNIFE (OR POSSIBLY THE MORA 5.8" ALLROUND, OR 4.1" BLADE COMPANION (MULTI-COLORED) KNIVES) WITH THE LIGHT MY FIRE 12,000 STRIKE FIRESTEEL STRIKER VERSUS THE VERY SMALL LIGHT MY FIRE KNIFE, WITH A VERY SHORT TANG COMPLETE WITH THE VERY SMALL (3,000 STRIKE) FIRESTEEL EVERT TIME!!!N.B. YOU REALLY DON'T NEED THE MAGNESIUM BLOCK IF YOU USE THE TINDERS DESCRIBED BELOW:ANOTHER TEST ON SUPER INEXPENSIVE TINDER (13.12.2014):I also tested the ability of Coglan's tinder (pack of 10) versus cotton wool of cotton from a women's sanitary towel/tampon dipped in some liquid vaseline from the local pharmacy/drug store.Coghlans Emergency Tinder Replacement 10 PackAll of these started fires with only one or two strikes of the Light My Fire firesteel and all produced the same slightly sooty flame suggested that the Coglands tider cubes are probably made of the same odorless combination. As such, why do you need to pay for tinder when you can make the best for very, little money?PREVIOUS REVIEW:Doan Magnesium Fire Starter ToolYou can also get a great 3 pack of pure magnesium blocks with firesteels and new inprived magnesium scrapers/strikers of only $ 15.00 which will probably last your lifetime (unless you will use them every day) from another company from Sweden! The Friendly Swede Magnesium Alloy Emergency Fire Starter Blocks (3 Pack)You can drill a small hole through the bottom of the handle of any of the suggested Mora (TopQ or 748 Allround (see below)) knives and attach either the firesteels or magnesium blocks suugested in this review via 550 paracord. The sheath is a typical plastic Mora sheath (color: black) with a solid knife clip-lock fell into it, it has a nice belt clip, and a hole for draining wáter at the base of the sheath should the knife get wet.For readers who may want a longer bladed Mora knive, I highly recomment the stainless steel Allround series which I also have, but while the 5 3/4" bladed model is really great, I find the 8.1" bladed model too big for small tasks, and not robust enough for big tasks such as chopping wood!:Morakniv Allround 748MG Fixed Blade Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel BladeMorakniv Allround Multi-Purpose Fixed Blade Knife with Sandvik Stainless Steel BladeN.B. Readers should also check out the reviews regarding the best tinder available for the price. Some reviewers highly recommended vaseline-treated cotton wool, while other recommend highly resinated pieces of pine wood (e.g. fat wood). N.B. It is beeter value to get the fat wood in a larger quantity, rather than the very small Light My Fire 'tinder on a rope' block. In conclusion, I believe that this Mora TopQ knife is a perfect knife for use on its own, but also in combination with the fire starting items mentioned in this review and I therefore rate this knife as a 5 star product. The author declares that he owns and has tested each of the products mentioned in this review, but also declares that NO CONFLICTS OF INTEREST EXIST in the review of any product mentioned in this review.

Very high value for the money spent.
There can be no doubting the value of the Mora product. For a street price of 12-18bucks, [there are more expensive options with other accessories available] either the stainless or carbon blades are likely to have a sharper factory edge than any knife costing four times the price. The steel is very good quality stuff that keeps an edge and is very easy to resharpen. Handles offer good grip and control, and the knife and sheath together are extremely lightweight. A marvelous cutting tool, they serve well in a kitchen, a campsite or in a game dressing capacity. These are never going to meet the needs of someone who wants to pry open crates and punch through aircraft skins. They are not made to be fighting weapons and they're lousy throwing knives. The sheath is a rigid plastic, and could be made better. It isn't made for inverted or horizontal carry. There is no retention strap. The knife just clicks into place, but a walking or a jogging pace will not dislodge it. I own many knives of different size, steel and function. I'm a very picky customer and I'm not easily impressed. For all their beauty, utility and presence, the reality is that all knives are simply sharpened shanks of metal or some such material. They're tools with purpose and function. Ask too much of any knife and you'll be disappointed. MY expectations and needs are met very nicely by the Mora product. I think yours will be too.

The grip is secure
The knife make me want to share slices of orange. No off taste flavors with fruit acids, reacting with metal. One stroke with ceramic rod sharpener to burnish an edge. This blade make me rethink the serrated edge need. The plastic sheath means wash together.Protect everyone ,to sheath. With care it will last, and provide one pass cutting.A very definite click will hold the knife securely in place in scabbard,Scabbard is included with knife. If it is not clicked in place, then it's not secure. My old fiskar ceramic sharpener seems to do the trick of Arkansas stones, and steel in one.No need to strop. The stainless steel is fine for me,this way it is for food, and general open most anything. The carbon steel version for some extra hardness, seems superfluous. The scabbard will hook on belt,or edge of pant.but for ultimate comfort there is a hole in belt connect loop ,a carabiner and it will pivot when you sit.No shaving with this blade or sawing. It only wants to cut clean.
