Hilarious slacker comedy from BAFTA-winning writers James Lamont and Jon Foster. Having failed to make it as a DJ in Bristol, Kent (Dylan Edwards) returns to the Somerset village of Neston Berry to hang out with old schoolmate Morpheus (Danny Kirrane), Morpheus sister Sarah (Rose Reynolds) and her friend Alison (Gwyneth Keyworth). The four were left on the scrapheap as others moved on with their lives, and now they're stuck in an aimless loop of cheap booze-and-drug filled escapism. The high points of their low-key, juvenile escapades include popping pills at a pub quiz and a tryst behind the polyurethane polar bear at Bird Zone.Gross-out gags and kidult cartoon humour combine with pop culture nods and weird yet warm characters with believable connections and emotions. Morpheus is into Alison, but she barely registers this with her face constantly in her bong, while Kent and Sarah haven't yet worked out the meaning of a drunken hook-up at the village fete. Directed by Tom Marshall (Chewing Gum, Drifters), there are fast edits, musical cutaways and plentiful flights of fancy, the finest of which sees Sean Bean as a medieval swordsman spirit guide.

'Spaced' for a new generation
Wasted is one of those gems which somehow slipped through the cracks at Channel 4. It should have been hailed as a comedy masterpiece and given instant cult status, but for some reason it was there and gone with no new series on the cards. It follows four stoners in a backwater West Country town. One of whom has a spirit guide in the form of Sean Bean (yes, the real one) in his Game of Thrones persona. The style brings to mind the whizz bang quality of Edgar Wright on Spaced, with whip-pans and fast cuts. The humour ranges from quirky to gross (the denouement of episode two almost defies belief), but always inventive. I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who likes their comedy smart and a little left-field.

One of the Best
I never intended to watch this when it came on, but I'm so glad I did. Such a great and funny show that should have continued on further. I miss the show and wish they made so many more episodes.

A couple of cracking comedies with onward potential
It’s a striking coincidence that two similar comedies, ‘Wasted’ and ‘Crashing’, both commissioned by the Channel Four/E4 stable, and both originally broadcast in 2016 are both being released on DVD in September of this year, 2018. They would probably say that it’s all a big coincidence and anyway, they might argue, the two shows are very different from each other. Except that they are not. Although both are about two very different groups of friends, they are nevertheless all outsiders, struggling to make financial and career sense of a life which is increasingly less viable for younger people. And although they are both funny, they both also carry a deadly serious underlaying message. They are both excellent and it occurred to me that there might be potential for a mash-up follow-up series in which their lives intersect. Like ‘The Young Ones’, but bang up to date. Just a thought. Both shows have 6 half hour episodes. 4 stars.
