Not great on 'normal' carpet.
Sadly, no one out of dozens of manufactures, makes a black protector for medium pile carpeting. The spikes are too short and the material is too soft, so the chair barely rolls. It will likely protect the carpet somewhat...I guess it is better than having nothing. Probably a great product for short carpet, which no one has in their home!

Did not meet expectaions
I purchased this mat because my office has carpet and it makes it difficult to move my chair around. I thought this product would solve my problem. The mat is very soft which causes it to have deep depressions under each chair wheel. This makes it hard to move the chair around as the wheels first need to overcome being "buried" on the mat. See the second picture. Also, the mat does not stay put in one place. It moves around despite the cleats making full contact with the carpet. See the third picture.Bottom line is that I will be getting rid of this mat and getting a better one.I hope this helps.

Difficult to unroll
I had to set up a mini-classroom for my daughter's virtual classes. I ended up putting it in an extra bedroom where there's not a lot of distractions. But it's carpeted, so I didn't want to ruin the carpet with desk chair wheels. This mat is more for flat office carpet than thick home carpet. It's got ridges across it as other people have shown, and was just awful to unroll. It comes rolled tightly with the sharp carpet teeth on the inside. There's no way to grab it to unroll it without stabbing yourself. Let it sit overnight and relax some, and then it's unrollable. I do like the black, but I bet its going to show a lot of dust and pet hair after a couple days.It does make wheel dents after you've sat in a chair on it, but I think that's more to do with the thickness of the carpet underneath than the thickness of the pad.

Average quality
So I’ve had this mat for 4 months now, bought the 36x48 version in black. Not happy with it, seems to be average or below average quality. The mat came rolled, or better said folded because it was more of an oval shape. Well after hours with a heat gun, days with heavy boxes sitting on it, and 4 months of use there are still folds in it. The mat seems to be a little thinner than others but much more malleable. An hour or two of sitting in the same spot leaves deep dents from the chair wheels, which makes it hard to slide around afterwards. It’s cheap, at $43, but the quality is counterintuitive to the reason for having a chair mat—to be able to roll around easily without leaving marks in the floor.

An objective review. (I promise)
I rarely write reviews for things, but I couldn't in good faith let this mislead anyone else into buying it.My purpose for the purchase:I wanted a sturdy mat for my desk and gaming chair that looked nice and protected my newly installed carpet.Considerations:- My height (6'0")- My weight (230lbs)- My gaming chair's weight (66lbs)- I'm a writer and gamer so I will be stationary for long periods of time (hours).- The carpet is medium plush density and brand new.Issues with product:- Chair sinks significantly into the mat (about 1/4 inch)- Chair doesn't roll smoothly due to it sinking into the mat.- Mat moves whenever I move my chair. This is also because the chair wheels sink into the mat.- The mat lifts at the edges when the chair wheel is roughly 6" away from the edge, thus the surface area you can roll your chair is reduced by 6" on all sides.Caveats:- Combined weight of myself and my chair is just under 300lbs.- Carpet has a medium plush density.- I'm stationary for long periods.Theory - It's possible that the mat is not designed to hold this much weight.Test Theory:- Had 5 year old sit in chair for 30 minutes.- 5 year old weights 34 lbs.- Chair weighs 66lbs)- Sat and played Sesame Street games for 10 minutes.Result: The chair had significantly sunk into the mat from a combined total of 100lbs, stationary for 30 minutes. Conclusion: The mat deforms from 100lbs within 10 minutes.Personal Opinion: Don't buy it. Doesn't perform the function intended. Even if I attempted to reuse it for storage purposes, it will deform and sink into the carpet with only 100lbs.

For low pile carpet
I have regular carpet that is in most homes…so this really doesn’t allow my chair to move with ease. This is for carpets that are tight to the ground.

Thinner than I expected
I've had a few of these, and this is the thinnest one yet. I fear it's too thin, since my weight in the chair indents the plastic so far the chair won't roll. The ones I've had before would stay flat so that the chair could move around on it's wheels.
