Wonderful, sturdy engine for Brio Trains.
A great toy for my grandsons. It has lasted now for more than a year through some "play abuse" of 3-5 year olds and still runs great. Supper neat sound effects when first starting out going either forward (train whistle sound) or backwards (bell ringing sound). With new AAA battery, it can pull up to 6 cars over hills. The battery replacement takes some patience, since the front of black front of the train comes off through a small screw in the smokestack - you have to be careful since the screw has very find thread. The battery lasts for quite a while, usually more than a day of intermittent play. Much more powerful than some of the smaller motorized Brio engines. Sometimes on very tight track turns, the train will derail if pulling a longer train, and when going backwards, sometimes it will have trouble going up steep hills when pushing, rather than pulling the cars.

Strong, fast (for a kid's train), good quality
This is the second electric train I purchased. The first one was part of the harbor set. I must say, the electric trains have really changed the way my LO engages with the tracks. He is so much more interested in building tracks. So I would try a train even if you don't get this one. That aside, what about the train? It has a plastic body using 2 AAA batteries. It feels heavy and durable. Cool features: -It is much faster (almost 2x) as the train in the Harbor set. -Strong: It easily pulls 5+ trains along flats and 3 trains up an incline. -Has a switch that disengages motor apparatus so you can push it without resistance. Some times you want to just push it. -Biggest downside: you can stack engines because it does not have a magnet in the front. -Second biggest downside: It has some sounds when you start it off, but thankfully they die out quickly as it chugs along the track. So they aren't super annoying. Summary: If you want a train want a train that looks good and has some good power, this is the train for you.

Absolutely Amazing Train!
BRIO makes such high quality trains! We love this battery operated one most of all. The red color is bright, it is compatible with all our wooden train tracks and it actually is really strong. My son loves loading up all the train cars he can to see how many he can get it to pull. We highly recommend this train to anyone who loves trains.

Great train until the motor broke, but Brio honored their warranty.
Had I reviewed this train in the first 5-6 mos. of ownership I would have given it 5 stars. I bought it for my 3 and 6 year old for Christmas a couple years ago. It has two different modes, a freewheel mode and a driving mode. The driving mode was able to pull several brio train-cars on a full battery charge (3-6 cars worked fine, but going over the overpasses was a bit of a struggle and it certainly couldn't haul much more than that). Changing the batteries is not as easy as it could be, but an adult with a small screwdriver can get it done in about 2 minutes. It did go through batteries (2 AAAs) a little faster than I had hoped (I think after the first two weeks or so of steady use after last Christmas I had to replace the batteries). The motor just gave out sometime after 6 mos. of normal use by the kids; thankfully Brio customer service was solid and once I shared proof of purchase and described the issue they sent out a new train which, so far, has kept working as advertised. Moving this back to a 4 star for them actually honoring their warranty, and itโs a fun little train too.

Very nice choo choo train.
This train is awesome. I'm pretty sure that I love it more than my 2 year old, and he loves it. I bought this as a follow-up present to the big expansion track pack that I bought him for Christmas (his birthday is in Jan) and I should've just given it to him on Christmas. It will pull a long train of cars forward (backwards is tricky with long trains) and the hills can be a problem with long trains...but that is any battery powered locomotive. This one is pretty hefty too. He understood the buttons in seconds.and even knows to turn it off in order to roll it around on the floor (disengages the motor mechanism when you turn it off). The battery door is really weird and requires a long small philips head screwdriver, but that's been mentioned. It goes through batteries pretty fast, but not insanely fast. Seems about right given the usage. I'm getting the green one next. I mean, my son is getting the green one next...

Almost perfect
Works great! Has amazing torque, great battery life the controls are easy and it can pull a Looong train. The ONLY changes I would make it to make it just a little heavier and get more weight over the nose to give it more traction and stability around turns and over hills and have a magnet on the front so more than one can be used together. I'll eventhally hot glue a magnet on the front and knock two birds out with one stone. My son loves this thing, wat a great addition to a classic toy set.

On the expensive side, but a quality Brio piece that will last for years and years.
I bought Brio trains and tracks for my son as a child that have now been passed on to his children. When I saw this battery operated engine, I bought it for them and they LOVE it. As toddlers, sometimes they trip over the tracks trying to pull the train and get frustrated after all the time they spent putting it together. With this engine pulling the little cars, they're just thrilled!!

Excellent Engine
First; itโs strong and can haul a lot over humps and turns with ease. Second, it has buttons to engage forward, reverse, and pause motion. Lastly, when itโs off, the drive axle disengages so a child can free play without damaging the motor or drive axle. If your child is playing with the engine and moves it against itโs desired direction, the wheels will click and drive axle is wearing. It can handle it, but over time, the drive axle will completely wear down and no longer engage when activated (engine will run, but wheels will not forcefully move). I know this because Iโve owned two of these engines (one used has this issue with the worn drive axle gear). Great Engine but can be broken; be careful buying used/pre-owned
