Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

A film I never get tired of watching.
What did you dislike?Nary a thing. What did you like?Everything about this film, made just before big budget films went widescreen to compete with television. Director Howard Hawks has a wry touch with comedy, while playing up Jane and Marilyn as female buddies with a lot of chemistry together (more than they have with any man in the film). "Thelma and Louise" owes this film a great deal. It is unfortunate the actors the leads are paired with (Elliott Reed as Ernie Malone, and Tommy Noonan as Gus Esmond Jr.) have been forgotten, since both are excellent. Charles Coburn does his usual star turn as Sir Francis โPiggyโ Beekman, and both Norma Varden as Lady Beekman and Taylor Holmes as Mr. Esmond Sr. are tops. The young George Winslow as Henry Spofford III is a hoot. Hawks did not direct the music/dance sequences, but they mesh with the rest of the film. Marilyn has the flashy role as Lorelei Lee, but is so mannered that I found myself cottoning to Jane as Dorothy Malone. No one had a more piercing gaze than this actress did; she sizes up everyone and everything around her in a flash. (Norma Varden played the woman in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN almost strangled by Bruno Antony, and she appears at the start of CASABLANCA.)What did you use this product for?To remind myself that filmmakers restricted by censorship (not just the Production Code, but also the HUAC investigation of Hollywood) can triumph over limitations, as can the crew, scenarists, and production staff. The actors are especially well cast. The film is a joy from start to finish. I watch it on a regular basis.

Classic movie of the silver-screen era
Would have been a 5-star review had the movie been formatted to fit a TV screen.

A Classic For Every American
This movie is so witty and well written. The rapport between Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe is amazing. And who doesn't love the all time classic musical number "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." For all the negative reviews about this movie being anti-feminist, they are ridiculous. The movie is a product of the time. My mom was raised to be pretty and marry rich. Thankfully we've come a long way and I only wish Marilyn had been alive for Me Too because in IRL she had to dodge plenty of wolves. But regardless this movie shows what amazing talents Jane & Marilyn were. I love love loved it!

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES from Fox Home Ent DVD
There are many DVD versions of this film with reviews all muddled up. That's OK if you just need to know about the film, but it can be confusing if you want to be sure about the quality. So my review is for the 20th Century Fox Home Ent DVD released 9 April 2012, with big pic of Marilyn (only) with her arms raised, and the incorrect billing off MM first then Jane. I admit to being a bit surprised at the 4.3 ratio (bars at both sides), when the reverse DVD cover plainly says 16.9 ratio, which, to me means it should fill the whole screen. However, 4.3 or not, this is a wonderful transfer, brilliant colour, crisp clear picture, slightly variable sound (the musical numbers), and good optional subtitles. No extras, but a terrific price (currently my copy ยฃ4.40). Howard Hawks was a muti talented director. This is the man who gave us "Red River", and this sparkiling, fun musical with both stars on top form. MM couldn't act to save her life here, but you can't keep your eyes off her. Sheer magic, and her song "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" surely ranks as one of Hollywood's great musical numbers/scenes. Speaking of songs/scenes..About 20 mins in there is the most wonderful, utterly camp number I can ever remember seeing...My wife and I actually laughed out loud it was so OTT...Jane dances and shimmies around 20 very fit nearly nude young men dressed in flesh coloured briefs. It has to be seen to be believed, and even then...At 87 minutes there isn't a dull moment. It's a shame that the 2 leading men are dull compared to the ladies, but any actor of the time (except perhaps for Mitchum) would have been hard pressed to compete. Russell or Monroe? Monroe or Russell. Two so different actresses and they compliment each other perfectly. Dated yes, but still great fun.

I bought this DVD for my own personal use. This is a film I enjoyed many years ago and I just wanted to see it again.

Russell and Monroe are great together, although maybe a bit predictable in the story line,a film with some great sound tracks, especially Monroe doing 'Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend'always an outright winner. Thoroughly enjoyable, I wish that the film makers of today would take noteon how to produce a good film, without gratuitous violence and swearing.
