The Perfect Boot
It seems like you have a choice most of the time between lightweight boots that offer little in the way of support, or big clunky boots that take a year to break in, and are never very comfortable. This boot is the best of both worlds.Excellent grip and foot stability, without feeling like you're wearing a cast. The lateral support is the amazing thing about Salomon boots and trail runners. Even with the laces loose, your foot won't rock.Out of the box, I took these on a long hike, then two consecutive backpack trips, and there was no break-in time. After walking 60+ miles, they still look new. The waterproofing is adequate, and even on hot days, my feet were dry as a bone in the evening, which says something about the breath-ability. I am also impressed with the large toe-box. My toes were never compressed together, and there was plenty of room to flex.Another plus is that these boots are true to size (depending on the manufacturer, I can wear a 7 to an 8. These are a perfect 7.5).I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a lightweight boot that doesn't want to compromise on support.

Lightweight and no toe bang!
I was looking for a lightweight, waterproof boot with good traction and ankle support. I was also looking for a boot that did not cause toe bang. The Keen Targhee Mid, size 6.5, that I wore for the past year gave me really bad toe bang going downhill. The Keen's were plenty wide for my slightly wider than avg foot, but it was too short causing my toes to hit the front of the shoes. I normally wear a size 6. Except, for running and outdoor shoes I order half a size up to accomodate thicker socks. I did not have to size up with these Salomon's. The size 6 fit just fine even with thicker hiking socks and a sock liner. I ordered the Black. The brown ones look a lot different, so I'm not sure if those fit differently. I've worn these several times and no toe bang going downhill. Woohoo! I haven't really tested the waterproofing on these, yet. The ankle collar does not dig into my ankles. There is one minor negative. Since the sole is almost as flexible as a running shoe, it leaves the balls of my feet a little tender at the end of a long downhill. A little more cushion there would be nice. I will try different insoles (i.e. Superfeet) to see if that helps.

Awesome, light, supportive
These are the first Salomon footwear I've ever bought. I do a fair bit of tramping/hiking here in NZ and have always used heavy, full-leather Scarpas. Why stomp around with heavy boots on, with no cushioning if you don't have to? I'm a slow learner ;-)These boots are fantastic. Light weight, sturdy, good flex in the forefoot so you can walk properly. Still stable enough to carry a pack or go off track through steep, uneven terrain. Pretty supportive despite low-cut ankle. The sizing does run big, though. I use the EU measurements and got a size 40 (US 8). Perfect!Salomon - if you guys read these reviews, please don't stop making these boots! Thanks Amazon - great price and service.

The brown shoes are not vegan, they are leather
i bought these because i thought they would be leather-free, the brown color ones are in fact made with leather. I am not sure if the black ones are vegan or if they are in mens or womens sizes, but they brown ones are in womens sizes and fit as expected.

Fantastic boots!
Received these just a couple of days before a trip to Utah for some back country hiking/camping. I'm seriously at risk for an Achilles tendon rupture due to a nasty drug reaction to Cipro antibiotic. I normally wear trail runners, but felt I needed the additional support of a mid boot. These boots and some kinesio tape got me through the trip. No break-in time at all! They felt awesome from the first time I tried them on. I only wore them around the house for an hour or two, so it was risky taking them on the trip.No worries! Super comfortable and light enough to wear from dawn to midnight. I had to take it easy with the tendon issue, but still put about 30 miles on these boots over the course of a weeK. They were awesome. I don't think I'll ever be tempted by another brand. In fact I think I'll get a 2nd pair for when these wear out. They are that comfortable.

Comfy and Sturdy
Must say these boots were comfortable and perfect right outta the box! In terms of women's boots, they run slightly big so suggest going for the smaller size that you normally revert to (I take a 9 in a sandal and 9.5 in a closed-toed shoe but in these, I'm definitely a 9.) These Salomon Discovery GTX boots are sturdy and have a medium width so even narrow feet (like mine) can adapt using thicker socks. The best thing about the boots is they have a neat look about them, they're not clunky like many I have tried on and not a smaller size of the men's version. So ladies, if you want to be stylish, functional and comfy, highly recommend.

Comfortable right out of the box.
These are comfortable right out of the box. They have a nice amount of padding in the footbed and around the collar. My feet feel much better after a long day of wearing these on hard floors than they did with my running shoes. The thicker soles protect your foot from shock and trauma. They are more comfortable if I do not lace them all the way to the very top, which allows my ankle to move around more freely. When I laced them all the way to the top my ankles would be sore after wearing them all day. I do wish the laces were a bit shorter. I have to tie them into several knots to keep them from dragging the ground.

Salomon delivers a quality boot.
I tried several other brands of hiking boots before I saw this one on Amazon. Wow, why did I waste my time with the others? I have never met a Salomon boot I don't like -- including these. The fit was true, the boots are well constructed, and they are good looking. The price was great and I am happy with my purchase. I know I will have these for a long time.
