Delicious pancake mix--can be made Top 8 Free!
As someone who is Top 8 free (no wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, fish, shellfish, nuts or tree nuts), I love this pancake mix. I usually make up the entire bag and just freeze what I don't eat. They are really tasty--they almost have a funnel cake taste to them in my opinion...so of course, I love them with a little maple syrup and dusted with powdered sugar. I use Ener-G egg replacer for the eggs and rice milk or coconut milk for my milk replacement and they come out perfect. They also have lots of recipes on their website and I can't wait to try out their all purpose flour--I have been dreaming of a cake or cupcakes that I can eat for a long time and the recipes online look amazing.

This Bona Dea Gluten Free Pancake mix is almost $7.00/pound.
Frankly, I am tired of being EXTORTED by manufacturers because I have a medical condition that does not allow me to eat anything containing wheat, barley, or rye. The average shopper pays approximately $1.00/pound for name brand ordinary pancake mix made from flour. This Bona Dea Gluten Free Pancake mix is almost $7.00/pound. I decided to give it a try since it was offered to me free for evaluation. It was easy to use [just add milk, egg and oil]. The pancakes were okay [a bit bland and a little more of a "gritty" texture]. I have tried other gluten free mixes with better flavor and texture [Pamela's is the best]; but all of them are outrageously expensive. I will not be buying this mix because I can not support a product that cost SEVEN TIMES more than a comparable "mainstream" product. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT COST ANYWHERE NEAR SEVEN TIMES ORDINARY WHEAT PANCAKE MIX TO PRODUCE. I realize that "gluten free" has become a "fad diet" for a lot of people. But, for me it is an absolute necessity. I think it is deplorable that manufacturers are padding their profits by extorting people with health issues. I simply won't support it. I will continue to make my own gluten free alternatives from scratch.

Surprisingly fluffy, tastes like buckwheat pancakes. Not a great value for your money.
I am not on the gluten free train - I don't have Celiac Disease, so no reason to avoid something that makes food taste great. However, my dear friend does legitimately have the disease and is always searching for products that she can eat safely and don't taste like sawdust or require a fifty percent increase in her grocery budget for the lack of ingredients. Enter this Bona Dea Gluten Free pancake mix. Since she was visiting this morning, we whipped these up to try.The batter processes normally with an egg, milk and bit of oil. Just like Bisquick, maybe a bit thicker (see the photo), but it stirs easily and cooks fine. The cakes themselves are a tad thicker than I normally like, but again, this batter is a bit thick - if I use it again, I think I will add a dash of water next time. I was actually surprised at how fluffy the pancakes turned out (again, see the photo). They are tender and cut easily and they absorb syrup just as you expect a pancake to. These have a definite buckwheat taste to them. You won't mistake 'em for your granny's light buttermilk pancakes, but they are fine and perfectly edible with a side of bacon in the morning. My one star deduction is for the price/value. We got a total of 7 pancakes out of one entire bag and if you have a family of four to feed, you're going to need both bags of this mix. That's going to get very expensive very fast as my friend pointed out this morning.

Expensive But Tasty
This vegan pancake mix is made with organic whole grains and it is non-GMO project verified, but not all of the ingredients are organic, and of course these are gluten free. My sister can't tolerate gluten and it is hard to make waffles or pancakes that taste decent and are gluten free, without breaking the bank. The Bona Dea pancake mix is certainly tasty, but it is noticeable different from those buttermilk pancakes, but you can make it tastier with certain toppings, but the price tag is insane. One pack of 15.3 oz makes about 8 servings, as stated on the bag. Thankfully there are two packs but it is obviously more expensive than the usual buttermilk pancake mix. You are getting higher quality ingredients and it is vegan. The price tag is worth it in my opinion if you need a vegan pancake mix that also tastes good. The millet flour does give it a slightly nutty taste and there is a trace amount of vanilla also, but it is nothing over powering. Most importantly for me is that these are produced in an allergen free facility because some mixes can have no milk, nut or etc. ingredients but are produced in a facility to also produces those allergens, so I know that my sister is safe with these Bona Dea pancakes. These are free from 8 allergens: milk, tree nuts, peanuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. There's already sugar cane in there so there's no need to add sugar. You can adjust the recipe to your liking, but it is quite simple. They have a suggested recipe but it contains eggs so I simply subbed out the ingredients that I did not want in there. The recipe is: 1 and half cup mix, which is already half the package), 1 egg, 1 cup of milk, and 1 tbsp of oil. I subbed in an egg substitute for the egg and unsweetened applesauce might worth as well, and then rice milk for the dairy milk. They came out surprisingly fluffy and not at all of tough or gritty texture. They are noticeable so there's no chance of tricking your non-vegan friends into thinking that this is just normal pancakes. I didn't try the tip to add salt and white distilled vinegar, but I will try it next time because it could make it more fluffier.I topped it with non dairy "butter", fruit, and honey/agave. I also tried it with coconut milk whipped cream with fruit, and another one I tried it with bacon and egg substitute. The bacon does cancel out the vegan portion, but they all came out tasty. My sister had multiple pancakes and as long as they pass her standard, it is worth it to buy this, even with the heftier price tag. With two packs, I can probably get about 2 batches of 6-8 in half a package, so one package would be 4 batches of 6-8 and then multiply that by two for two packages.

Ok taste.
This is a easy pancake mix. Just mix powder with egg, milk and oil. Easy to cook as well. Make digger pancakes or waffles. These is a vegan mix and has natural ingredients. Also gluten free. Has an okay taste that can be covered up with syrup. Fed this to my four boys and three liked them and one fix nor. So a decent mix with an ok taste.
