Schumacher SE-5212A 2/10/50 Amp Automatic Handheld Battery Charger

Ordered for a Christmas gift for my son-in-law. He didn't use it until February. Unit didn't work and whatever is inside the metal case is loose and moves around. Has anti tamper screws so can't open to see what is loose inside...Unfortunately he discarded the box it came in and would be more hassle to attempt a replacement.Update: Purchased a set of security bits for the screws. Opened metal case and found the transformer inside not secured to bottom. Case had slots cut for one half of transformer to slide into, but no other method to secure it from sliding out was noted. This unsecured item caused wires to be pulled from various locations and one switch to be damaged. Told my Son in Law to write company for instructions for possible replacement.

I was a little leary about purchasing this charger after reading some of the bad reviews. I understand getting a lemon here and there so I took my chances knowing Shumacher was a reputable brand. As others have stated the fit and finish was terrible. The charger was heavy and felt sturdy however it was not assembled properly. A lot of the "tangs" or male ends were not inserted into the opposing female side. There was a large dent on the bottom of the charger right out of the box. To top it all off, I tried charging a deep cycle battery for my boat . With my old charger it was juiced up overnight on 2 amp. This charger would never read fully charged after three days of being hooked up and it was NOT trickle charging. I felt it was best to send it back and get my money refunded before it ruined batteries or god forbid caught some on fire.

I bought this item on May 28, 2015 as a Father's Day gift. It worked perfectly the first several times I used it but on September 16, 2015, I hooked it up to a battery and it got hot and started smoking. Now it doesn't work. So I checked into it and it's too late for returns or exchanges.

Battety charger is acting kind of strange. It shows percent of charge, (which is really voltage), and when I have it in 10 amp mode, shows a different percent, than when it's in 2 amp mode. I'm charging a deep cycle battery, have it on that setting (deep cycle), but when I select 10 amp, shows 0 percent charge, and when I select 2 amp it shows 50 percent charge. Maybe it's my battery, I will update. But other than that, seems be a good charger.Update, charger is defective, does not operate properly. Will not read deep cycle battery properly. Charges erratic, and not correct.Update on charger, I'm not sure why but it eventually charged my two deep cycle batteries. Took three days. The charger is strange,when using 10 amp mode,it shows way low battery, but when use 2 amp mode shows 3/4 charge. So, I had leave it on 2 amp mode ,and to complete the charge on my battery took 3 days. Very odd, it's automatic, so I'm just not sure whst up or if it's normal. Just never had charger act like this.it worked,but very slow and odd.

Do not waste your money. We bought this charger in March of 2017. It is now February 17th 2018. The charger simply stopped working. I've charged (3), 12V batteries with this charger, one deep cycle 850 CCA at the 2 amp range for approximately 30 hrs each, and (2), standard 625 CCA at the 10 amp range for 12 hours each. We've used the charger a grand total of 84 hrs +/- 30 minutes for my own error margin. This charger is a piece of junk. We bought it thinking we wouldn't need another one if we spent the extra money on a larger charger. (Wrong). How convenient for the manufacturer that it is no longer returnable.

WAS a good charger.. bought summer of 2016 and only used here and there to charge the lawn mower/kids ride-on toys etc. only had been used maybe a total of a dozen times. Today dug it out of the back of my truck to charge a dead battery on the car and it made a loud pop and smelled burnt wiring. That was the end of its short, barely used life.

Bought this 7/2016 now 6/2018 it no longer works. By going on YouTube I found out it was bad diodes. Contacted Century and they said by the time you buy the parts and pay shipping you’re about 1/2 way there to buying a new charger. Parts were $11.75 and shipping was $8.65!!! It appears that this charger has built in obsolescence after reading other reviews. I had other chargers that lasted decades after numerous uses but not this charger. I always kept this charger in my garage and when I did use it I was careful to keep it out of the weather so the charger still looks brand new. I’d stay away from this brand of chargers. I’ve enclosed a picture of the charger even though the cover has not been reassembled yet as I’m waiting for my parts to arrive.

Biggest piece of ^*%+ This company made good products at one point but they must think we are going to use this in our living room. Contacts are attached like they are meant to rip away. The one I got doesn’t even produce 50 amp. Took me forever to figure it out( I could notStart even a small gas engine with it unless I charged the battery first). Finally tested it and realized what I really had.(half of what I bought at best)
