FiiO E18 KUNLUN Android Phone USB DAC & AMP

For the money this a the Cadillac of sub $300 dac/amp combos. Works with Android, Linux and windows. Sounds good and even has enough punch to power some t50rp mk3 headphones to a level that could easily do hearing damage. The only complaint I have is when it's sandwiched to my phone it picks up interference from certain wireless protocols. I fixed that with a piece of rf-id blocking material in between the two devices.

The good stuff (why I didn't write this review): the sound quality is definitely improved over the factory sound card of my Moto phone. The battery life is as good as you would expect, it has a good feel to itThe bad stuff: The biggest problem of this DAC is that when I plug it into my phone, it makes it act strangely. If the phone is on vibrate, it will often change the setting to turn on the ringer, so my phone will make noise when I get a call/text. Annoying considering that I use this at work. Also, I will often find that it will disable the lock button on my phone, even after I unplug it. In order to get my lock button working normally again, I will have to reboot my phone. The other problem is that the sound will fade from one of the channels from my headphones as if the connection to the 3.5mm jack is loose. The final problem is really more of a slight annoyance, which is that the volume dial is backwards. You rotate to the left to turn the volume up instead of down-------Update: After having this product for about two years, I've decided to downgrade this from 2 stars to 1, since the DAC no longer charges. I expect better build quality than this

I have not tried any other portable amp or headphone combination, but based on the difference and improvement i observed, it deserves a 5 star. I use it with Focal Spirit One S headphone, and it completely brought out what the headphone is truly capable of. For every headphone i got, i am always somewhat disappointed at the marginally different in performance, but with this amp, now i know the problem are not the headphones, it's the unit powering it!if you are always disappointed at at headphones you have, maybe try one of these external amps, you will be surprised!

This amp is glorious. A lot of headphone amps take analog in, so the sound quality is only as good as whatever device you're using, but this presents itself as a USB audio device, and includes a high quality DAC. The noise floor is almost dead silent, and it can drive some serious headphones without issue. Works perfectly with both my laptop + Nexus 6p, all I need to carry around with the amp is a 6" micro USB <-> USB C cable.

Very powerful amp for a portable and good dac too. It can power my Fostex T20rp MK3 (which as I understand is quite the feat for a portable amp) as well as my easy to drive Hifimans and Philips. Sounds amazing. Bass boost is perfect for open headphones. Solid feeling metal chassis. Connects flawlessly as a dac to both my phone and computer. Love that it's a 3500mah power bar that can charge my phone when needed as well. Beware that all dacs are quieter outputting on android than PC, this one included. It is a good amount louder on the PC or aux in, I assume it's an android usb driver issue. But don't worry, volume won't be an issue unless you have hard to drive headphones and want to melt your ears while on the go. After a couple weeks use, I'm still loving it. The music addict in me is satiated. For now...

I'm not sure if anyone is planning to use this with a Asus ZenFone 2 but just in case. I use the E18 with the ZenFone 2 (ZE551ML) and it works great. The only odd thing it does is when the screen is off and you plug it in and power on the E18 the phone reboots. So you must double tap the screen to wake up the phone then power on the E18. Other than that the E18 works flawlessly!!! The audio is great, It doesn't drain the battery much during use, it was a life saver on a long airplane flight and my phone needed a charge, the track control buttons on the side work on the phone and computer and I paired the E18 with Sennheiser HD280 Pros. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. P.S. I've had this since 1/30/16.

I purchased this unit to use with my Galaxy S7 and an assortment of headphones (Oppo PM3, B&O H6) when I am out and about and/or traveling. I could have gotten more expensive and arguably better portable units (Oppo HA 2 SE, Chord Mojo etc.) but something like this really has two basic functions: to produce good, clean sound and to provide satisfactory volume, even with difficult-to-drive headphones. The E18 KUNLUN does both quite well. It can drive my HD 650 and R70X just fine as well as my Oppo and B&O without problem. It is also simple and easy to use. It has a hi/low gain switch, bass boost (unused), and it will charge another device (unnecessary for my purposes). It is very well made and rather attractive in a basic, utilitarian sort of way. It has no bad habits or glitches that I have been able to detect, either. Altogether, it is a fine dac/amp and because of its performance, I have not been able to persuade myself to step up into a "better" and much more expensive dac/amp. Recommended.

Small and powerful. The E18 brings power-hungry headphones to life. Be they Beyer Dynamic, Fostex, Audio Technica, Grado, AKG, or Sony... The Beyerdynamic and the Fostex are the toughest to drive, practically useless with an iPhone only. They all realize their potential with the E18. Buy this and enjoy your cans.

Los aficionados a la música y a la alta fidelidad sabemos bien que los smartphones no son capaces de sacar provecho de unos buenos auriculares. Todos sin excepción, tienen un circuito amplificador para auriculares demasiado sencillo, capaces sólo con pequeños auriculares de botón.Un producto como este es absolutamente imprescindible si eres muy exigente con la calidad de sonido. Tiene unos acabados muy buenos, con un cuerpo completo en aluminio. Botones metálicos y potenciómetro de volumen de un tacto excelente. Se entrega con una funda textil y con todos los tipos de cables de interconexión necesarios.Por el hecho de ser DAC, nos "saca" directamente todo el flujo de datos del archivo sin ser procesado por el DAC interno del smartphone. Procesado y amplificado en un sólo dispositivo portátil, con una buena autonomía, por cierto.Vamos al sonido, que es lo que realmente importa para alguien que piense en un producto de este tipo.Los combiné con unos Sennheiser Momentum circunaurales, exigentes en la entrega de corriente por su baja impedancia de 16 ohmios y por el diámetro de sus altavoces.Sonido absolutamente limpio, definido, contrastado y con una colocación espacial precisa. Bajos potentes y limpios, nada de saturación ni reverberaciones. Agudos cristalinos y nada metálicos. Voces claras.Mis gustos van por el rock, country, folk, blues, funky....vamos, música con instrumentos reales y poca electrónica. Con esta música queda justificada la inversión. Hasta con la clásica da la talla.Recomiendo totalmente la compra, esos si, no es barato, pero tampoco es una inversión exagerada.Si eres un auténtico melómano y tienes unos buenos auriculares, te hará muy feliz.

Um es vorab zu vermelden, ich war sehr, sehr skeptisch, ob sich eine derartige Ausgabe w i r kl i c h l ohnt und es nicht wieder eine neue Art von akustischem Voodoo darstellt ( ich lächle noch immer über die unglaublich vielen Standfüße für Boxen, die goldenen Kabel mit Platineinlagen etc.). – JA, ES LOHNT SICH IN DIESEM FALL! –Wem das als Bestätigung seiner bereits gefassten Kaufabsicht langt, der kann sich die Zeit des Weiterlesens sparen und diese lieber damit verbringen, sich einen Kun Lun zu gönnen.Für den geneigten Leser, der noch etwas Zeit für die Entscheidungsfindung aufbringen möchte, ein paar mehr Informationen. Da sich aber mein Note 3 mittlerweile zur meistgenutzten Musikquelle gemausert hat und dank seines reichlichen Speichers auch als Archiv durchgehen könnte (128 GB Micro SD ohne Probleme mit .flac gefüllt und durch PowerAmp flüssig verwaltet, n7 kann es auch bestens) war ich geneigt, selbigem etwas Unterstützung zu gönnen. Zumal die verwendeten Kopfhörer das Note nicht oft aber doch manchmal an die Grenze des sauber Darstellbaren gebracht haben. Insbesondere der Tieftonbereich leidet manchmal bei hohen Lautstärken und insbesondere bei Kopfhörern jenseits der 150 Ohm. Aber selbst bei einem Beyer T5p ist trotz der 32 Ohm beim richtig tiefen Bass mit entsprechendem Druck, die Grenze der getreuen Darstellung erreicht. Habe es in der direkten Wiedergabe eines sauber aufgenommenen Titels bemerkt und im Vergleich mit dem Betrieb am heimischen Receiver bestätigt gefunden. Mit Unterstützung des E18 ist der T5p dann aber fast nicht mehr von dem Betrieb am Receiver zu unterscheiden. Es ist nicht so, dass ich bei jedem Stück einen gravierenden Unterschied bemerke, das wäre auch ein Armutszeugnis für das Note 3, welches es nicht verdient hat. Im Gegenteil, im leisen und mittleren Lautstärkebereich sind Note und Fiio wirklich in Augenhöhe, vielleicht ein wenig mehr Luftigkeit bei den Höhen beim Fiio aber nur im direkten Vergleich. Aber wenn es etwas lauter werden soll und ein starkes Bassfundament eine Rolle spielt, dann schlägt die Stund des kleinen Kraftpakets. Völlig entspannt und unangestrengt kann bis zur Schmerzgrenze erhöht werden (und selbst dann ist noch Luft nach oben), keine Verzerrungen, kein Brei und Matsch im Bassbereich, w o w . Es bleibt nur die ständige Gefahr, zu lange, zu laut zu hören, da hier wirklich ein absolut verzerrungsfreier, klarer Klang abgeliefert wird. Hier ist meinerseits langfristig disziplinierte Zurückhaltung gefordert. Allerdings entsteht auch im normalen Lautstärkebereich der angenehme Eindruck, niemals in den Grenzbereich der Leistungsfähigkeit vordringen zu müssen…. Genutzt habe ich bislang lediglich die Low Gain-Einstellung mit dem T5p, einen 600 Ohm T1 kann der Fiio definitiv nicht sauber betreiben, hier knickt er im Bassbereich ein. Ich freue mich schon auf Urlaub, Flüge etc. wo mir der Fiio sicher viel Freude bereiten wird. Zusammenfassend will ich vor übertriebenen Erwartungen warnen, der Fiio kann nicht zaubern, schlechte Aufnahmen werden nicht besser, wer bislang mit guter Hardware gehört hat, wird keine Offenbarung erleben. Wer allerdings der Meinung ist, sich unterwegs das derzeit bestmögliche an Qualität gönnen zu wollen, der sollte den Preis verdrängen und sich an der Qualität des Fiio erfreuen, immer und immer wieder ;-)Ach so, ich erinnere mich an die hier geäußerte Kritik bezüglich auftretender Störgeräusche beim Signalempfang des Telefons....diese ist berechtigt, die Störgeräusche habe ich auch bemerkt, also Flugmodus einschalten und das Problem ist beseitigt (die Außenwelt muss auch mal akzeptieren, dass ich nicht immer und überall erreichbar bin ,-)Der Vollständigkeit halber sei erwähnt, dass der Fiio vom Win7 sofort als externe SPDIF-Schnittstelle erkannt wird und nach der automatischen Installation der entsprechenden und einem Neustart betriebsbereit ist (allerdings musste ich anschließend den Fiio mehrfach Ein – Ausschalten, dann erst erklangen die erwarteten Töne). Das wird allerdings von mir eine recht wenig genutzte Option sein, funktioniert allerdings bei Bedarf tadellos.Zur Qualität von Verarbeitung und Funktion ist bereits vieles geschrieben, ich ende daher mit meiner abschließenden Empfehlung!

Das Teil klingt gut, sogar richtig gut.Am Mac:Ich höre definitif Details die ich mit dem internen DAC des "MacBook Pro Retina (Early 2013)" nicht wahrnehmen kann. Der unterschied zum internen DAC hält sich allerdings in grenzen.Am Handy:Beim "Samsung Galaxy S6" sieht es ganz anders aus, da ist wirklich ein riesen Unterschied zum internen DAC zu hören. Allerdings nehme ich auch ein Brummen wahr.Generell:Ich nehme ein generelles Rauschen war, bei leisen fast stillen passagen.Verglichen habe ich "Contact" von "Daftpunk" auf dem Album "Random Access Memories" in "24/88.2 khz" mit meinem Shure SE-846. Shure SE846 Sound Isolating High-End Ohrhörer mit vier Treibern und Subwoofer Random Access Memories Einen Stern abzug gibt es wegen dem Brummen wenn über USB am Galaxy S6 angeschlossen.UPDATE:Mittlerweile habe ich zum Galaxy S7 gewechselt. Auch hier ist ein Brummen und sonstige unschöne Artefakte hörbar, teilweise richtig laut. Als mobilen DAC ist dieses Gerät leider nicht brauchbar.Am Mac bin ich weiterhin überzeugt. Ich hatte mir für den Musikgenuss am ipad, ipod und iphone extra eine Beyerdynamic T5P Kopfhörer zugelegt. Dieser sollte extra für den relativ schwachen Signalausgang portabler Geräte ausgelegt sein. Beim ersten probieren war ich jedoch etwas enttäuscht von dem flachen, leisen Sound. Ich habe mich danach mit dem Thema Kopfhörerverstärker beschäftigt. Hier gibt es eine große Auswahl an stationären und portablen Geräten in allen Preisklassen. Nachdem ich für den Kopfhörer schon tief in die Taschen gegriffen hatte und eigentlich ein bisschen enttäuscht war, wollte ich jetzt für den Kopfhörerverstärker nicht schon wieder so viel ausgeben. Habe dann die FIIO Verstärker entdeckt und mich für den Kunlun E18 entschieden. Der Verstärker hat einen Lautstärkeregler und zwei Knöpfe (Gain High oder Low und Bass On oder Off). Ich habe das iphone5 dann mit dem Lightning Adapter über die digitale Schnittstelle an den FIIO angeschlossen, dann beide Knöpfchen auf High bzw. On. Wow! Der FIIO holt aus meinem Kopfhörer ungeahnten Klang heraus. Bin total begeistert. Was für ein satter Sound! Mit dem Lautstärkeregler kann man sich ohne Probleme das Gehör ruinieren. Mir reicht mittlere Stellung völlig, damit der Kopfhörer vibriert. Der Klang ist besser als an der Stereoanlage. Absolute Kaufempfehlung von mir.

Wäre ich böse, würde ich sagen: FiiO hat einen Creative E5 nachgebaut, sinnloses (Bluetooh, Zawnags-Dauerladen, extra nötige APPs) weggelassen, und die Fehler des E5 ausgebessert.Der Kunlun läuft bei mir auf PC und Notebook problemlos. Die Mediatasten gehen auch unter Windows, der foobar2000 hat keinerlei Probleme meine LoassLess-Dateien an den DAC zu senden. Lediglich bei > 96kHz muß ein Resampler zwischengeschaltet werden.Des weiteren läuft der Kunlun auf meinem Note4-Fon (wo der E5 gezickt, bzw. total versagt hat) problemlos. auch hier gehen die Hardwaretasten "Out of the Box" und die Musik kommt dank speziellen Players ( [...] ) mit den vollen 24 Bit / 96 kHz an meinen Ohren an.Ein wenig zu viel Bass hat der gute Kunlun in meinen Ohren. Aber das ist wohl reine Geschmackssache. Der Rest an Musik ist völlig ausreichend für unterwegs. So angenehm hab ich meine Zeiten in div. Zügen noch nie verbracht!Wer also einen guten, portablen DAC sucht, der auch noch recht gut universell einsetzbar ist, kann in meinen Augen mit dem Teil nicht viel verkehrt machen.
