Most Designs Use Garter Stitch in Traditional Ways
Where is the garter stitch "revival"? Alas, most of the patterns in GARTER STITCH REVIVAL: 20 CREATIVE KNITTING PATTERNS FEATURING THE SIMPLEST STITCH are for cowls, ponchos, shawls, wraps, shrugs, and scarves--all fairly-easy-to-knit wearables that traditionally incorporate garter stitch, because they're good beginner projects, or require knitting a lot of fabric.I'd hoped that this book would change my mind about garter stitch (which I've never cared for), but that didn't happen. Of the 20 designs in this collection, the only one that I might want to knit is the intriguing Brioche Boardwalk Cowl (a cowl with a sectioned band of reversible stripes done in orange and blue, by Jessie Ksanznak; see my customer photo). The book's "garter stitch" designs are divided into three main categories: Garter Stitch Details (6 designs); Garter Stitch in a Supporting Role (7 designs); and Garter Stitch All Over (7 designs). The designs in the first two categories use garter stitch, but not enough of it to make you think of the finished items as garter-stitch knits. The Garter Stitch All Over section includes only two sweaters: the Festival Halter Top (a very plain, sleeveless tee, by Sachiko Burgin), and the Autumn Evening Shrug (by Melissa LaBarre). Both are decent knitted garments, but the fabric looks like ordinary garter stitch. The Garter Stitch Details section has three sweaters with garter stitch decorative elements: the Seashell Dolman Tee (garter stitch columns at the waist, by Kiri FitzGerald-Hillier), the Asymmetrical Cropped Jacket (garter stitch back panel and button band, by Toby Roxane Barna), and the Just Peachy Saddle Shoulder Cardigan (wide garter stitch bands at waist and cuffs, by Kristen TenDyke). The Garter Stitch in a Supporting Role section has two sweaters with garter stitch yokes and bands that contrast with the fabrics' main stitches (e.g., lace, brioche): the Cotton Candy Mosaic Yoke Cardigan (colorful garter stitch yoke in Greek key mosaic bands, by Amy Gunderson), and the Santa Monica Cardigan (long cardigan with garter stitch back, by Holli Yeoh). The book cover photo shows the Arrowhead Stole (by Courtney Spainhower), which is one of the many included shawl, cowl, and wrap designs. As you would expect from an Interweave Press book, the designs have both written-out and charted instructions, accompanied by schematics. In my opinion, the book's overall design isn't up to the usual Interweave Press standards, although the multiple photographs of the finished items are of the high quality you always expect from this publisher. The skill level for these designs is probably intermediate to advanced intermediate; a few of the scarves can probably be knit by adventurous beginners.

Garter Stitch book
The patterns call for, or use, speciality yarns. They are well written.

Not a book for new knitters
This book disappointed me. I was expecting products made using the garter stitch. Instead, these knitted items use the garter stitch as part of the garment or scarf. I wanted to give it to a new knitter, but it is too advanced for someone who can only knit. If a new knitter had guidance, this book would work.
