Small, but powerful
Bought this for some DIY projects, thinking it was a low powered sander. To my surprised it’s rather powerful and gets the job done in no time. Highly recommend.

Belt sander
Have only used it for one small project so far, but it has worked great!

Good bang for the buck--surprisingly powerful and really digs in...
A really nice feature is the sawdust collecting canister--it is very effective and catches at least 95% of the dust. Be careful when removing it when emptying it out--it's just a plastic friction-fit part and could easily crack if not pulled directly straight out. You can also use a vacuum hose to empty it very effectively. It does not hold a ton but that's OK--it's a small sander. Surprisingly powerful for just a 6 amp motor. The warning light system for sanding pressure applied is kind of superfluous because it just keeps sanding no matter how hard you push down. It could mean longer product life if you do not continuously keep the red warning light on I am sure. Sanding with this little powerhouse is a little like isometric exercise or lifting weights--a lot of work! But nowhere near as much work as using a sanding block manually of course. You can't go too far wrong buying this unit for small jobs. A highly optimistic users manual calls for the user to replace the bearings and brushes at a specified interval--that's not going to happen for most users who will just throw it out. Good sander.

A GREAT TOOL!
Easy to operate! I have never used a belt sander. Works great! Highly recommend it! The pressure control is a great idea! Not heavy. Great design. Reliable.

It has some weight to it and it’s got power
I had a skill 3 x 18 belt sander for maybe 30 years. It just broke. I got this one same size and it’s loaded with power. I was very impressed. I was expecting a piece of junk for the price, but it works great. It even feels heavy, a lot heavier than my older one.

Great for a deck and home projects
I had a few home improvment projects that needed some real sanding. After going through about 20belts on this thing it's great. It'll run for 30min to let you sand down large parts of a deck which is great. It also does some nice detail work to smooth out joints and glue squeeze. Swapping out the belt is easy and mine does a great job at staying in place as you are sanding. Dust collection is a joke, but I've never had a hand tool that wasn't. Great setup.

Mostly positive!
Works great! The only star it missed is the dust collection. I have spent a few hours and many belts and the dust collector didn't pick up much dust whatsoever. I could spend minutes after every use blowing out all the dust from everywhere but in the container!

Buena potencia

Excellent Value
I bought this sander halfway through a carpentry project when my eight times as costly Makita sander decided it was time for the motor to burn out. In my experience, this is not something unusual for Makita, their alleged robustness notwithstanding. This Skil had some good reviews so I ordered. At that price, what was there to lose? It arrived the next morning and was able to finish my project with almost no interruption. Operation is flawless, the belt stays in position and the transparent dust catcher makes sense. The 18 inch belt is a size down from the Makita but didn't notice any difference in use. Some posters have remarked the unit gets hot. I didn't find that to be the case at all but with power tools I am always mindful of duty cycle so never push these units to the limit. Show some mercy and let it cool down once in awhile and I think you will be just fine. Maintain some perspective. If your intention is to sand a ballroom floor or a roller-derby track, rent a drum sander or hire a guy who has one. This Skil is priced and built for the handyman, furniture maker, stairs and railings builder etc. - not the sort of industrial user who needs to grind down 2 x 4's into toothpicks all day. Surprisingly light with a nice feel to it. Mine came with a medium grit belt installed - just right for many projects. As with most power tools, be sure to use hearing and eye protection and keep your fingers clear of the business end. Bottom line: "Skil" name and quality for the handyman/homeowner/craftsman at a great price.

Easy to handle - good build quality
I’ve had this at work for a few months. It is more compact and easier to handle than some others out there. Still sands like a demon tho. I work restoring old building fixtures like windows and doors, so medium tasks that take some finesse. The load lights are unusual and it’s easy to push into red. Not sure how it would handle heavy prolonged load. I give it four stars only because I can’t yet say how long it will last. The dust collector works but fills quickly. Better than those little fabric things many tools come with. I would recommend it … great value - good to see Skil can still make nice tools.

Little sander that could....
Had to redo my deck at my cabin. No drum sander to rent from nearby so purchased this belt sander. My deck is 12x15+ ft with steps that are 7x5+ft. Deck is 14+ years old pressure treated lumber, no prior staining/finishing. Too a lot of work, but this little guy did great. 60-80 grit, and it took off top wood with ease. The canister is a bit small for the amount of work I was doing, so I just let it blow (but you could hook up to the hosing on a wet/dry vac). The belts stayed where they should (until slight high screws tore them, and then they wouldn't auto-track). Never over heated. Quick and easy to change belts. I don't think I've spent better value on a power tool. Before I purchased, I did note some prior reviews commenting on the motor getting hot. Does get a bit hot, but the moments to stretch my back allowed it too cool down and I had no problems with it. Highly recommend!!
