Dining With The Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook

Very silly and quite clever, too
So this is an episode-by-episode series of recipes tied to the reinstated series which began in 2005. Now, I'm a Who fan, but I'm nothing compared to Chris-Rachael Oseland! She has an encyclopaedic (bordering on obsessive) knowledge of these programs; but, she also is a very creative culinary crafts-person. Some of the recipes are in the "funny decorated snack" vein; for example a banana which is carved and tarted up to look like a Dalek. Others are what I would consider to be "real" recipes, like the "Satellite 5 Mystery Takeout Noodles," which I would I wouldn't mind trying out right now. Each recipe has a name, the episode to which it is tied, a picture, the ingredients, and a long narrative which gives the instructions interspersed with clever and funny (or silly) discussion of the episode, how she came to decide on this recipe, and how best (or not) to present the finished product. The writing is brisk, breezy, and enjoyable. I found that I had to do some research for most of these to get the most out of her text. Hmm, now what's a Slitheen again, and why are beans on toast a good tie-in? Off to Google image -- oh right, I remember --flatulence.If this were available in print, it would make a fine gift for that Who fan on your list. Actually, I think that the official Dr Who people should license her recipes and text, and produce a version which has official images in it.Good job on this.

Thin book but packed with content
I, myself, cannot claim to be a Whovian. However, my brother definitely is and this was a birthday present for him.Reading through before I gave it to him, it was fun to see that the author was detailed and seemed to pull in the tiniest of details from the show. Not only that, but there were historical facts in the content. I love that this is the book that keeps on giving...it has the Doctor Who content, history that some history books have left out, delicious (sounding) recipes and even photos so you know what you SHOULD be making. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. He loved the book and can't stop talking about it.

Cooking along with the show - what a great idea!!
I enjoyed this book, but then I've sat down and read cookbooks since I was 9 years old. So many people miss out on all that a cookbook has to offer because they think its just a collection of recipes, when in fact so many of them are so much more.Great humor and the writing was not half bad.Just one problem - I wish the author would have included a picture with every recipe so you'd have a complete understanding of what they had in mind for the finished product. Also, being that I don't drink, I wish the author had been able to come up with more that was not alcoholic beverages - or maybe offered substitute ideas for the alcohol. I didn't include this when I selected the stars because that does sound like a lot to ask for, but then again I can't be the only doctor fan that doesn't drink.Enjoy :)

Some cute ideas
The cover of this book is a little more high tech than the contents themselves, but I think we are going to get some good ideas from the book. The author definitely put effort into coming up with a recipe for each episode and it is fun to read the intros. The book looks like it was developed on a home computer and you can tell that the pictured recipes were made by an amateur, but in a way that adds to the appeal. The variety of recipes is pretty stunning, and plenty of alcoholic drinks are featured. It's also nice that there are so many variations on the "classics" like fish fingers and custard. I hope this book takes off for the author and can be re-edited to give it the professional edge it needs to compete in the specialty cookbook market.

Definitely not what I was looking forward to...
First things first, I love Doctor Who and anything Doctor Who related I will probably jump on no matter the case. When I saw this book on Amazon I immediately had to have it.As soon as you start reading it, the onslaught of grammatical errors can be incredibly overwhelming and just by looking at it I had this sinking suspicion that the book might have been self published. Maybe I should have really observed the title "Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook". But, that aside, I have to commend Ms. Oseland. She did put a lot of time into creating this book. You can definitely tell she studied almost every episode of Doctor Who and while I'm a fan, some of the things in this book even I don't remember. The pictures of the finished products are grainy and dark and a lot of the recipes end up saying, "Use your imagination and use this instead of that." which I could clearly do on my own if I wanted to. I am, however, excited to try the nifty cocktail recipes.I find this more like an arts and crafts book more than a cookbook to be honest. Things like, "Find a really straight banana to make a Dalek." doesn't count as a recipe in my book. That all being said, it's not a complete waste of my money. It's adorable, cheeky, and a bit entertaining if you're willing to devote your creative juices to creating mini villainous Doctor Who characters. If you're going to buy it, buy the Kindle version. Sadly, the print book isn't anything special.

perfect for the Dr in your life
Oh my gosh this is such an awesome book! I got this for my husband who is a major whovian. so much so that there is very little in way of dr who items that he does not already have. so when I saw this I grabbed it, just jumped right on it and I am so glad I did. Looks just like the picture shown, feels decent weight material that will not fall apart (I HOPE) also It has a bunch of great looking recipes. I have not sat down with him reading it through in detail yet to make sure it is not all a bunch of disgusting stuff or even worse it is not a regular cookbook that has regular recipes with the titles of each dish just changed into something Dr Who sounding. If we notice either of those two things or the book falls apart or the dishes all taste like garbage I will surely return immediately after noticing anything like that and will update/amend my review and take away stars. Till then FULL STARS great job.

Food for Who
Just came across a link to this on the Kindle and downloaded it.What can I say, I've only read two of the recipes, Banana Dalek and Sontaran Soldiers. The latter had me thinking of bread and eggs but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was nothing of the sort but in fact jacket potatoes which the whole family will eat, I have at least one fussy eater at home.Reading the recipe for Banana Dalek almost had me in tears of laughter. Chris-Rachael Oseland has a lovely turn of phrase and from the little bit I've read seems to have a wonderful way of putting her recipes down which a few of the big name chefs could use with learning.

Silly and fun
Despite poor proofreading (difference between its and it's, elicit and illicit for example), this is a delicious present idea for Dr.Who fans. The writer has a lovely sense of humour, and does try to compensate for being American in terms of ingredients and instructions - really no problem for anyone used to adapting recipes. You are bound to pick up a jolly party idea and you will smile while reading.

Bit chatty, but good for fans
It goes through each episode, giving a recipe for each one - lots of good ideas, though some episodes were clearly harder than others! It is a bit chatty, which makes it good for light-reading, but if you're a very serious cook, might get more annoying. But I liked the tone, and am going to use some of the ideas for my Dr Who party - overall, a success!
