The Lost Art of Heinrich Kley, Volume 1: Drawings

A Significant Expansion of Kley's Graphic Genius....
Heinrich Kley is one of the 20th century's great graphic artists. Were there any justice he would have a place of honor next to the other heavy-hitters of German Expressionism, Kirchner, Beckmann, Dix and the rest. Kley was Sidelined by his reclusive nature and by the near fatal designation of "illustrator" and he became, perhaps, the most underrated artist of the last 100 years. But Kley's graphic art, whereby every mark carries the force of life and the genius of imagination, was too vital to be buried forever. It's now seeing a long overdue revival. This book digs into the archives, Kley's now obscure book illustrations and incidental works. It's a bit uneven at times but the collection emerges with many large and brilliant nuggets, unseen for a century and well worth the excavation. JDA

Inspiration for Fantasia
Heinrich Kley (1863-1945) was a master of incorporating motion into his sketches. For this reason alone, an art student would want this softcover book full of over 300 pen and ink sketches. Enjoying modest popularity during his lifetime, he was apparently ahead of his time, because his art has been revived in recent years. I am not an artist, but a writer. I study these sketches to create a story from them. Walt Disney found a folio of Kley's work in the 1930's, and it provided much of the inspiration for "Fantasia" (1940). Disney said, "Without the wonderful drawings of Heinrich Kley, I could not conduct art classes for my animators." 'Nuff said.

Great Book, Great Reproductions
The Lost Art of Heinrich Kley, Volume 1, is a Great book, great reproductions with many Kley pieces I've never seen before; pieces not found in the classic Dover books "The Drawings of Heinrich Kley" and "More Drawings By Heinrich Kley". l discovered the Heinrich Kley through Dover books over 50 years ago. The Lost Art Books/Picture This Press is a great source for the never before seen art of this early 20th century genius

Should've bought the Dover book instead.
The cover and the price might lead one to believe the reproductions in this book are higher quality than you would get in a Dover publication, this is not the case. Save yourself $13.00 and get the Dover instead.

Disappointed
A creative mind unfortunatly religated into a base mindset fixated on nude female breasts. Though there are portions of the book that are free of nudity I just threw it away along with the other one from this same illustrator.

I have loved the works of Heinrich Kley for years
I have loved the works of Heinrich Kley for years, so I was looking forward to this volume of his drawings. The works are fascinating, as expected. However, there are a couple of minor annoyances with this cheep edition. The paper of the book is slightly thinner than the old 60's Dover edition, so drawings can be seen on the other side. Some of the drawings are reduced a bit too much to appreciate them fully, and the originals were scanned at a very high contrast, so some of the fine line work is lost in the process. These few matters notwithstanding, it's a good reference guide for much of Kley's drawing opus, and it will reward your patience with the sheer quality of the artist's work. I gave it five stars simply because there isn't much on Heinrich Kley out there that one can choose from, but he is very much due a decent hardback monograph.

Really bad printing quality
Print quality is really low considering the price, but the drawings are wonderful. Would not have bought if there was an alternative book of this artist
