This excellent biography is not over-burdened with unnecessary details and goes straight to the heart of the matter: That no single lifetime, however extended, could have Sontag's infinite intellectual curiosity sated, Sontag as a Faustian character who always wanted to learn more, know more, and experience more.This book is fundamentally a description of Sontag's intellectual journey, an assessment of her achievements as a supreme essayist, as the champion of European culture as well as relative failures as film maker, playwright & novelist.Not quite a standard biography then.
