Q: I'm a us size 8.5 wide. should i purchase a size 9? or will the 8.5 fit ok?

At least 9 wide. Your normal street wear shoes are normally used walking on flat ground, out on the trails you often find yourself walking downhill--your foot slides forward a bit and if your shoes don't have enough space your toes press against the end of the shoe. I've encountered a person that had a toenail fall off because they wore their normal size on a long hike, and more than one with lesser injuries. Note that this is in no way specific to these shoes, you oversize all hiking shoes & boots.

Q: the shoe says mens but when you go to check out it says womens which is it?

It depends on the size. A women’s 9 is a men’s 7.

Q: I need to return a pair of keen walking shoes to keen (not amazon) and they're asking for the "tag number". where might that be located?

On the inside of the shoe, it has the sizes and the style number. The tag number is also there.

Q: why can you only get wide in the color brown

At this time, the wide silhouette is only available in a brown color.
