Grizzly Industrial G0838-16" x 24" Variable-Speed Wood Lathe

This is a heavyweight lathe. The plywood packaging didn’t hold up and pieces were detached. Despite a good coating of boshield t9 the bed is beginning to rust after a month. Speed and direction controls are quirky, to turn you must select forward and zero rpm, push “on” button, select neutral and then forward again, then spend a minute or two fiddling to get the speed i you want. If you stop to check something you must repeat the whole rigamarole to restart. The headstock vibrates a lot. Head and tail stock are out of alignment by 1/8”. Had to replace the included live center after an hour of use. Above all, don’t buy from amazon. Grizzly discriminates against its amazon customers by not honoring their price-matching pledge if you purchase from amazon. This could save you $$.

The headstock is amazing. Easy belt adjustment. Rotation is as smooth as can be. Variable speed control is great; however, the off-on switch’s close proximity to the speed control knob is too close for gloved fingers. I am constantly having to reduce the speed after turning it on.The quill in the tail stock needs some re-engineering. For me the quill failed soon after doing some heavy drilling. The threads on the quill became damaged after a bit of use. Can’t be turned forward nor backwards. I have ordered replacement parts, but they are back-ordered. Been waiting now about 4 weeks. Must be other wood turners are having similar problems with it also. I would look elsewhere before buying this machine.
