Like zoo books on speed!!!
Fantastic book. Got it for my son who is just crazy for animals. Here's on the spectrum, so it's hard to hold his attention, but this was so interesting to watch him table the big words. I love it too. It's a great Twitter account too!

Unusual animals...
The subtitle of this book is "Highlighting the Wonders of Evolution and the Extraordinary Diversity of Life". That's a perfect description of the contents of the book. Each animal or fish discussed gets a short paragraph telling you all about them. I recognized a lot of them but I learned a lot, too. I wasn't up on the animals of the deep. I also learned that some fish are really scary. The way they eat is disgusting! There are a lot of animals listed but you don't get bored. Just about everyone of them is odd in some way. Mr. Compton kept me reading. The ones I knew about I learned from books I read or found out about them on Facebook. There are science and nature pages you can follow and I've learned a lot from them. Now, reading this book I learned more. The author shared a copy of his book with me for review (thank you). I'm glad he did. It's a good natural history resource and also shows you which ones are becoming endangered species. Logging is not good for our land and that's reflected in this book. You can get a copy of this book now, it's out. Why don't you see how many you recognize?

Production Issues
The book is very small, which would be OK, but this hardbound copy is really HARDBOUND.to wit -- It will not lie flat like most any other book, & that stresses my arthritic hands just awful. The spine is just not crackable, & you have to hold it with 2 hands, even if you are young & fulla juice.I have a nice flat rock I use to keep normal books flat-open, but this binding just flips the rock off. Many of the illustrations are very poor. The information given is very sketchy -- but I think you can google all of these wacky beasties for more info. And also for better photos. On the plus side, I found no errors revealed by my larger searches. Some of these creatures I have encountered in my own long life as a naturalist, & the author did well by them.

Good book, poor pictures
Rather small and paper quality was low for a book with pictures. I should have paid more attention to other reviews. Content is still interesting.

Meh
Photos don't look great on paper. Would be better in gloss.

Great book for kids and adults alike.
I bought this for my daughter's 7th birthday. She loves animals and has been really excited looking at all the strange creatures in here. It makes a change from the usual animal books that she has showing lots of different creatures we'd never heard of before. There's lots of information about the animals too. The adults in the household have very much been enjoying it as well. Very educational and just shows how amazing nature and evolution are. Highly recommended.

Great stocking filler for Christmas
I loved this book. For anyone who loves animals adults and children this provides fascinating information regarding animals that you probably never even knew existed. I would highly recommend it. A great insight of the diversity of animals in the world.

good introductions to a lot of fun animals
when it comes to nature there's probably too many animals that could be perceived as strange for anything but a massive book but here though decent the book could definitely have included more, that being said if you want just an introduction into a lot of the very most weird and wonderful lifeforms on our planet with some fun and often insightful notes this makes for quite a good little read
