3M 2153DC-NA Caulk Remover

I don't know how to caulk bathtubs. I try and I just don't get it and I messed another one up. I applied way way too much and the GE product I was using was horrible. It was sticky and turned into a mess. I ordered a DAP product a shower installer suggested and I needed to start over and there was so much dry, new GE silicon caulking I had to remove. Trying to scrape it out was almost impossible. It was too plyable and well adhered to the tile and porcelain bath tub.So I tried this. I covered all the areas and let it sit for four to five ours. Basically applied it liberally while I was home at lunch from work and started removing when I got home at night. It was still a chore but it all had losened and pealed out with ease.But head the warnings! I grabbed a sponge with an abrasive scrub backing to help scrape the caulking out. Everything started turning blue and I quickly figured out the 3M remover was disolving the sponge! I got a dropplet the size of a dime on my leather shoe and the black coloring came right off.Five stars because this made my life so much easier and did exactly what it says. But don't get it near certain plastics.

This product works well. I had tried to chip away layers of caulk in the tub using a putty knife, a razor, and a caulk remover tool, and didn't get very far, even after heating up the old caulk with a blow dryer as I've seen recommended. I read the reviews for this product and thought I would give it a try.People had commented that leaving the product on for two hours per the directions wasn't enough time. I put a heavy bead on the areas of caulk I wanted to remove and let it sit for 24 hours. My experience was that the caulk did not come off in neat little strips. The remover turned the old caulk into a very soft material and it came off very easily with a putty knife and/or razor blade, like paint your scrap off wood furniture after you've used paint stripper.The parts where there had been just a single layer of caulk were easily removed. The areas where layer upon layer of caulk had been applied are taking more work. I got off as much as I could with the first application and have applied a second heavy bead of the remover. I've used about half the bottle for the two applications.I really like that the remover has little or no fumes at all. I still keep everything well-ventilated and I wear disposable latex gloves when I am working with the remover.Lastly, to make sure the remover wouldn't harm or discolor the fiberglass, before using the product I did a patch test by applying about a dime-size amount on the fixture and letting it sit for about 2 hours. I highly recommend doing a patch test first!

I had a tough job --- removing an old crusted on shower door from a porcelain cast iron shower. I worked for hours scraping and peeling caulking before I turned to the internet looking for a better way. I was hesitant when I got it - the consistency of hand lotion and virtually no smell. I was expecting something harsh and foul smelling. So I put this on - directions said to wait 2 hours minimum. Being the curious impatient human that I am, I checked after an hour. It was already soft and easily peelable, but I waited thinking longer is better - think smart not hard. Even on the shower walls, which are not smooth but have a bumpy design, this stuff is working. Just take a razor blade and go to at it. Coincidentally, porcelain when scraped with utility knife does leave a grayish mark but stove top cleaner made for flat top stoves cleans and polishes porcelain tubs gently and beautifully!! 3M products always continue to amaze me. I will definitely turn to this product again and again when I am trying to remove caulking! Thanks 3M and Amazon!

I have to give this product a 3 star review for the following considerations. First and foremost, this product did an excellent job of loosening old caulking in my bathtub. I would give it 4-5 stars for that feature; however, it had an unfortunate side effect. Our tub has a plastic bathtub surround, which had some sort of reaction to this product which caused it to chemically melt. Everywhere that this product came in contact with the surround it completely melted away the surface finish. So, the product performs as described, but your mileage may vary. Moral of the story; test in an inconspicuous area before you apply to the entire area, which I did. However, don't be so careful/inconspicuous that you don't actually get in on the surfaces that may have a reaction (like I did). Now I've got bigger fish to fry.

I did not receive the label that is shown in the product description. However, since the label on what I received claimed to be a 3M caulk remover I figured I would give it a shot rather than go through the return process on such a minor item. Whatever 3M poured into this bottle does not remove caulk. Seriously, no caulk removal. Nada. None. However, to their credit, the label was right on when it promised eye and skin irritation. My guess is that because this is such a lousy and harmful product 3M switches the label regularly to make one think it is a new and possibly safe product but actually it is most likely the same old worthless gunk. Fortunately, for me, I had also ordered a Bosch tool kit that included a caulk removal attachment. The Bosch tool made caulk removal a simple and easy task and as a plus it did not irritate either my eyes or my skin.

I was trying to remove the old caulking on my 18 year bath tub, and boy what a pain! The caulks have became so hard like concrete. I had to remove little piece by piece so I don't damage the bath tub, I spend a couple house per day and 1 week later there are still a lot of caulk left!Just when I was about to give up, I came to Amazon and search for caulk removing tools, and came to this item. After reading the reviews I decide to give it a try. When I use it for the first time, I was so amazed! This item somehow "melt" the caulks and soften them. The caulks became so easy to remove! If you are having trouble removing old caulks like I do, buy this product, it helps!

I replaced our patio door and so I needed to remove 20 yr old caulking and this stuff really made a difference. The key with this product is you need to be patient and play the long game. I applied a bead of the product over the caulking, spread it over the surface (clay brick in my case) to ensure it was applied to all of the caulking, and then let it sit for two hours. Once the two hours was up, I applied another application and let it sit for another two hours. After that, it was significantly softer and much easier to remove, even flaking a little bit!If you're trying to remove a fairly thick bead, I would try applying two applications (as described above), remove what you can and then apply more to the remaining bead.

Fantastic stuff removed caulk that was years old and had set like rock.

Perfect and work very well. Softened the caulking for removal. Left overnight on the caulk and all was easily removed.

3M is the best caulking remover made. Works great for a great price.
