Unfortunately, like all tech today, they became outdated quickly.
This was a great gift for 2 of our grand children a couple years ago. They are child resistant, & have held up well. The kids love them. Unfortunately, like all tech today, they became outdated quickly. Vtech's next big item was innovatab, or some such. the software/modules for the new one don't work w/this one. And the ones that were made for it, are few in number, & harder to find all the time.I think we have purchase 3 extras in addition to the first one at the time we bought the reader itself. There really aren't any more to buy, as the children are now 5 & 7, and no new ones have been released. They should have made the modules for the new model retro fit, so we could continue to buy them for the older units. Disappointed in VTech's lack of forethought on that front.

Fantastic gift for child but....
My dad bought this for my recently turned 4 year old and she loves it. I do think the "books" you buy for it are a bit pricey but this is about the v reader itself. First I like the new look - my son had gotten his a couple of years ago so it's nice that this one is different. It can really have your child occupied for a really long time in a very constructive way. However, if you have to change batteries you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. We got a blue screen and the unit would not start up! Fiddled with this for hours till I found a site on the internet that lead me to this link:[...]If you download the program to an SD card, you can then reinstall the software to the v reader and it will start up again. You would lose what was stored on the unit before but what can a 3 or 4 year old save?Anyway, parents, please buy an SD card in case you need to "reboot" the v reader or if you want to download stuff off the v reader site.Hope this is helpful.

I would love it if it worked the way it is supposed to work. The batteries only last for one time playing on it, no matter how short the time. I bought this toy in late summer or early fall last year and put it up to give it to my grandkids for Christmas. By the time Christmas came around and I discovered the malfunction, the warranty was out. I recently wrote the manufacturer to see if they will honor the warranty` anyway considering the circumstances since I also bought several cartridge games for the product. I will never but an electronic item that far ahead to give as a gift due to this experience

This was an amazing learning tool for my autistic son
This was an amazing learning tool for my autistic son. I cannot give enough praise to the VReader. Bring it back!!When it died he asked for another! He had it for years and it had been through everything! Albeit, The power button finally gave out. :(

My 2 and 4 year olds love this!
If you check out the official vtech website, they will occassionally have good deals on games and accessories for this. Complaints: the stylus is easily lost. Wish there was a cord or something to keep it attached, like how magna doodle toys do. Also, it is very slow to load when powering on and the little ones get impatient. Wish there was a parent lock feature on the settings, such as volume, greeting, etc. I do love how it teaches kids to write their numbers, letters, and other educational games. It is true that it doesn't come with a lot of content, so just watch for good deals for the cartridges on amazon & vtech sites

be prepared to spend more $$$$
I had no clue when I ordered these for my twins that I would also have to shell an extra $60 each for the reading pen. I wold never have ordered them.My twins are 3 so the basic apps included are fine but Its nothing but a glorified fisher price computer without the reader pens.I wish I could get credit for them.oh and if you are ordering this buy the wall adapter too. It takes 4 AA batteries and they died in a day . SO I have to fork out another $20 for the wall charger.I do not recommend this unless you don't mind buy the addition parts needed to use it as advertised.

Learning tool from Amazon
This item was purchased to aid our daughter, a 50 year old intellectually handicapped person. She is able to touch words in the stories and get a verbal description of what she is seeing. Hopefully, some of the words will remain in her vocabulary recognition. She is unable to pronounce many words, but with repetition she may retain and be able to recognize words in books, newspapers and other media. So far she is very pleased with the ease of using this V.Reader and looks forward to adding more stories to her library.

Love VTech!
Love VTech stuff and this one does not disappoint, either! Very cute story cartridges are available as well as downloads. Nice that kids can either listen and read along or play games...all educational and encourages reading!
