What a treasure!
Do to some medical issues and the drugs that I have had to take for them, I get some very strange memory things happening. I will be writing along and suddenly cannot remember how to spell a common word that I have used numerous times, perhaps even in the last few minutes. When this happens, it is a true mental blank. I can pronounce the word, but the spelling just won't come through. This little device has a feature in which you can type in the pronunciation and get the correct spelling back - fantastic! This device also has very reasonable definitions of words. I have had other electronic dictionaries and the definitions are generally pretty poor. Poor as in one or two synonyms or a few words. This device gives very reasonable definitions. The thesaurus is also quite good. To be honest I have not used the other features extensively but the few times I have, they have also seemed quite good. Having had the benefit of this device sitting next to my computer, I would never want to be without it.

Bought a Sharp PW-E300 with OED 2e (ed 2003) and New Oxford Thesaurus (ed 2000). I loved it. It lasted two years or so until the lines started missing on the display screen.Replaced with Seiko ER8100 and the difference is as following:1. Computer built-in (also Oxford) and Sharp PW-E300concise | kənˈsʌɪs |adjectivegiving a lot of information clearly and in a few words; brief but comprehensive: a concise account of the country's history.ORIGINlate 16th century: from French concis or Latin concisus, past participle of concidere ‘cut up, cut down’, from con- ‘completely’ + caedere ‘to cut’.2. Seiko ER8100:conciseadjectivegiving a lot of information clearly and in few words;DERIVATIVESconcisely adverbconciseness nounconcision nounORIGINC16 (earlier (ME) as concision) from Fr. concis or L. concisus, best part. of concidere 'cut up, cut down'.Comparison:The Seiko ER8100 has a word missing in the definition. It should be "in a few words" instead of "in few words". There's no phonetic aid (neither did the Sharp PW-E300 though). PW-E300 has a few functions that neither computer built-in dictionary has or Seiko ER8100 has. Sharp PW-E300 has superjump, note, history, and quickview functions. The note function is particularly useful when used to compare very similar words and their usage. And Seiko 8100 doesn't have the currency exchange function.I don't know whether the malfunction of the dict definition is a result of this:"2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. [...]complies with [whatever Canadian law]."I have no idea what those compliances mean. This line was seen on the fine print on the back of the device. It seems rather unusual as digital devices previously bought never had this type of warning printed.Pros:Featuring bits of concise Britannica that's definitely a bonus though my main goal was to get a decent Oxford Dictionary.edited on Oct 10th, 2019, originally posted on May 22nd, 2019.

Bought years ago and my kids still use them weekly - Invaluable
My son’s 7th grade vocabulary scores on state testing are off the charts. He and my daughter love these handy dictionaries, encyclopedias for quick lookup. Well-made. I put in new batteries about every six months. Worth every penny!

Too bad, but avoid this product!
This Seiko mod. ER8100 dictionary was fine for about 5 or 6 months. The cost was over $100. That is not a sign of a quality product. The arrow button used to scan downward is sticking and not functioning properly. It sticks and is difficult to use. There is no contact when pushing the button. This button should have been made stronger since it used a lot. In this price range I expected a better quality product.I can not recommend this Seiko product. I would not buy this unit again. You should seriously consider a different dictionary since 6 months is too short a time for failure.

Okay, But Physical Design Needs Improvement
Seems to be okay for its intended purpose and basic function, based on just one or two uses. However, the lower 3-star rating has to do with the unit's construction, assembly, etc. If you are not careful and tilt the screen too far back for the best view, the thing will just flip all the way over. In other words the top screen part is heavier than the bottom keypad so it is not balanced well. They need to either provide a better, more visible screen so it doesn't have to be adjusted so far past the 90 degree vertical or they need to add weight to the bottom keypad.

Great Puzzle Solver
I purchased the Seiko ER8100 when a replacement for my worn out Sharp dictionary/thesaurus was not available. I used my Sharp regularly for several years when stumped on cryptic crossword clues. Other less expensive products did not have the large screen and extensive capabilities of the Seiko. It has exceeded my expectations.
