King Stones: The Best
These King Stones are legitimate Japanese Water Stones made in, you guessed it, Japan. They are extremely versitile and are the highest quality stones I have used. However, there are a few more good companies out there. Water stones are true to the craft of knife honing and sharpening and is a useful skill to teach yourself. I highly recommend watching virtuovice (YouTube Name) on YouTube for excellent tutorials on how to sharpen with stones. The lower grit stones like the 250 and 400 are great for taking out chips in the blades or reprofiling the edge to fit your needs or preferences. As a camper who beats on knifes and axes, I really need this benefit to take out those chips and these stones do so beautifully. A good stone grit to breach the gab between the lower grits and the finishing stone is the 1000 grit. This will help smooth out the edge and give it some great sharpness. It also makes finishing the edge with a 3000 or 4000 grit stone an easier and less time-consuming step in the process. Finally, you should use a leather strop with a green and black compound to really get a good edge. Bottom Line and Reccommending Sharpening System: 1.) 250/1000 grit King Water Stone 2.) 3000 or 4000 grit King Stone 3.) Leather strop with compound You only really need the 250, 1000, and 3000 (or 4000) grit stones with the strop. I have seen the strop put a better edge than 8000 grit stones. Keep in mind a strop is only 30 bucks or so, and you could almost spend $100 on an 8000 grit stone. This reccommended sytem will make a butter knife scary sharp if you wanted it too. However, the stones are expensive and will loose shape over time depending on how much you use them. But the time you use them will definitely yield better results than a spyderco Sharpmaker (I have one). I also reccommend some sort of a stone holder like the Steelex Sharpening Stone Holder. This works well and makes it easier to work with.

Great stone
This is a fantastic stone and this stone by itself will handle all of your sharpening needs short of a polish if you don't desire to polish your edges. The 1000 grit has a nice feel and feedback to it and produces great results. The 250 grit side is great as well it has a nice feel to it and really soaks up water and it cuts quickly. It is great for re-profiling edges or sharpening extremely dull edges. Also if you are in a major hurry and don't have time to do a full sharpening session, the 250 grit side can quickly put a good "working edge" on your knife to get you by. The 1000 grit will get your edges hair shaving sharp no problem. For 20 bucks you cant go wrong. I pair this stone with a Suehiro Rika 5000 grit polishing stone for a nice satin polish finish and wicked sharp edges. It's a great low budget set up that still brings very high quality feel and results.

KING K-80: First Look at the Dual Grit Whetstone.
It's a two-fer, like, you get a super rough #250 for fixing up your beat-up blades, and then a #1000 for cleaning up the scratches. Basically, one side's for when your knife's straight-up wrecked, the other's for getting it ready for the fancy sharpening. It's a decent size, not too big, not too small. King's supposed to be alright, gets the job done without breaking the bank. Gotta soak it in water, typical whetstone stuff. Haven't actually put it to the test yet, but seems like it'll do the trick for getting those edges back in shape. This review represents my personal opinion and experience with this product. Beautiful stone with one flaw
The 1000 builds up a really nice slurry and is really nice to sharpen with however it's too thin of a stone to really get a good even bur.

Quality sharpening stone for your kitchen knives (and other stuff)
I bought my first one of these in Japan. This one is the exact model I bought there. The King name is a good one to stick with. Some of the other stones you see on Amazon may be advertised as Japanese stones or may have Japan in the name, but are made elsewhere. This particular stone gets a workout at my place, and the original is just over half the original thickness from successive sharpening and flattening over the years, so I decided it was high time for a replacement. The rough (250) side will wear a lot faster than the finer side, so you have to flatten it more often. You can do this with sandpaper on a flat surface, a carborundum flattening stone or CBN or diamond plates (going from least to most expensive). I have other means of sharpening my shop tools to a much finer polished edge, but I find this stone best for maintaining blades in the kitchen, where I just want to get it done quickly and without fuss or complications. Use the rough (250) side to re-establish the bevel and prep for the finer side. The 1000 grit side as much polish as you need for kitchen use. For most of us, this is more than sharp enough.

great stones for the price.
awesome stone for the price. 250 side cuts pretty quickly, 1000 side is perfect for removing the large scratches from the 250 side. you could get away with only using this stone, but i would definitely recommend at least a 3000 for a smoother, more refined edge. an edge finished on the 1000 side will still damage your food the way a factory edge would, if you care about that kinda stuff. i should mention, though is that the 250 side wears very quickly and will need to be flattened semi-regularly if you are constantly resetting bevels on old knives. but if you are just sharpening knives that aren't in too bad of a condition, then you might not need to use this side at all. i have been using the 250 side to sharpen a bunch of old knives (~12) and its nearly all gone. but i had to do some major reshaping, so it might last a lot longer for anyone else. to flatten, you can just buy some sandpaper with a lower grit than this (>250) and flatten it using that.

Simple and effective
I have always been unhappy with an electric knife sharpener I had received as a gift. Knives just didn't get as sharp as I wanted them, and after some time the thing stopped sharpening knives altogether. I have been searching for a new sharpener for quite some time. Based on a lot of research I gave this stone a try. I am glad I did. You don't have to be a Japanese master chef to obtain good results with this stone. First you have to soak it in water or get it wet until it no longer absorbs water. Second you need to immobilize it on your kitchen counter so it will stay put when you run your knife over it. I found a very simple but effective solution: Take one section of newspaper, make it wet, place on counter and put the stone on it. There are many videos on YouTube you can watch to get an idea about how to go about the sharpening. The techniques vary. I found that there are more ways than one to get your knife sharp - much sharper than the fancy electric gadget ever did. Keep knife and stone wet, start with the green (coarse) side, then flip stone over and finish on the brown (fine) side. Rinse stone before moving on to the next knife. The angle of the blade on the stone is important. Watch the videos and you will succeed quickly and enjoy the best cutting knives you ever had!

Decent stone with a future.
Despite a horrible experience with Amazon I really like this product. This multi grit stone though targeted toward novice blade sharpeners will be useful as you progress. It is a waste of money to buy coarser grit (below 400) that are expensive. By their very nature as a coarser grit they will wear quicker and not stay flat as long. Buy cheaper stones to fix a blade and save your money for nicer higher grit (500 to 3000) to sharpen your blade. Anything above merely polishes your work with very small rewards. Back to this combo. Nice coarser grit side to repair your edge and decent enough higher grit side to do the job as you learn. When you progress this stone will still have a use and you won't be wasting your money. Make no mistake, do your part and you will have an edge you can shave with with this combo. Good luck and have fun.

Small and comes without a stand
It may be my mistake that I didn't check, but one would assume that if the thing cannot be used without a stand, it would come with it. Not sure how to use it, if I put it on the shelf by itself, it just keeps slipping. Also much thinner and less wide than the other Kings stone I have. Which means more passes than a bigger sized stone.

ottima
