Such a cute dress and the patter was really easy to follow
Such a cute dress and the patter was really easy to follow. I adapted a bit to accommodate for a Halloween costume but the pattern was easy to follow and exactly like you'd expect.

Worth the time and effort!
This is time consuming and costly if you purchase expensive fabrics but my daughter loves it and she has received many compliments. I truly enjoyed making it and the yarn wig turned out fantastic. The other reviews says it was too small and I do agree but I did not put in a zipper. I knew my daughter would want to wear it for dress-up so I just put in a few eyehooks so I can adjust it as she gets bigger. She wears a nude color long sleeve body suit and I didn't bother to put in the inner lining and skirt ruffle. The fabrics I purchased from JoAnn's were expensive which brought it above $100 but it is of high quality and will not tear as easily as the cheap children costumes you can purchase from the store.I would recommend this for intermediate dressmakers. I will post a pic of the finished dress on my 5-year old.

Rapunzel pattern
Just cut this pattern out. I made adjustments so that the dress will look more like Rapunzel's dress does in the movie. The pattern instructions are easy to understand.

Not crazy about this pattern.
It was also missing a piece - in all sizes. I had to make one up with tissue paper. Also - doesn't really look like the dress in the movie so I made some adjustments there as well.

Needs some modifications to resemble Rapunzel from the movie
Pattern Description:Rapunzel from Disney's "Tangled"Pattern Sizing:Childs, sizes 3-8Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Yes.Were the instructions easy to follow?Moderately. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I dislike many things about this pattern. Firstly, the coloration on the picture and recommendations for different colored fabrics for the bodice and underskirt. In the movie, Rapunzel's dress is all one color, except for trim and the inset on the skirt. Accordingly, I bought only one color of fabric, rather than two.Secondly, in the movie, the skirt of the dress is one layer, and does not have an overskirt. This seems unnecessary.Thirdly, the skirt on this dress is much too full. There are 3 panels to the skirt, (piece 8 is the underskirt front, and piece 9 is cut twice for the sides and back.) It's gathered almost as closely as possible. You could cheerfully leave out one panel (having only the piece 8 for the front, and one piece 9 for the back.) and it would more closely resemble the dress from the movie, though slightly fuller. To do this, simply cut piece 9 so it's NOT on a fold, to get the back seam which is necessary for installation of the zipper. Sewing all the layers of closely-gathered fabric is rather difficult, so it would be much easier without that extra panel. In an effort to create the narrower skirt as seen in the movieFourthly, It's also obscenely long. I've sewn this dress for my daughter's 4th birthday, which is coming up. She's very tall for her age, being the height of most 7 year olds. I cut out the dress in a size 8 so she would have some room to grow into it. The skirt went past her feet and pooled out around her on the floor - I had to cut the skirt down to the size 3 line to get the appropriate ankle length that she wouldn't be tripping over the hem when walking.Fifthly, this is a fully lined pattern. It calls for facing around the neck of the bodice, which is extremely unnecessary. By altering the sewing instructions, that facing is not necessary. Instructions say to stitch lining to dress at neckline and armholes, wrong sides together, then attach facing and press it to the back. Instead, I recommend stitching the lining to the dress at the neckline, right sides together - then flip the lining inside so that they are wrong sides together, and then stitch the lining to the dress at the armholes. Press the neckline so the seam is flat, slipstitch lace trim to the neckline by hand to eliminate unsightly seams. This eliminates any need for facing. Making this modification means very little interfacing is needed, only that which is used on the sides of the inset, to place eyelets in.Lastly, a small modification on the instructions for sewing the sleeves. The pattern directs you to first sew the seam from wrist to armpit, and THEN to hem the sleeve. This is quite impossible unless you wish to hand sew that hem. It's much easier to hem the sleeve, and THEN sew the wrist-armpit seam.Fabric Used:Casa collection sparkle satin in violet for bodice, inset, and underskirt. Casa collection violet organza with translucent beads for overskirt.Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:The pattern offers only yardages for 45" fabrics. I used 60" fabrics, and had an untouched yard each, plus other remnants, of both satin and organza. Using only 2 panels for the skirt instead of 3 would offer another 1/2 a yard to a yard depending on the size you're making. I alsoAlso, as any of the fabrics used in this dress fray like crazy, I recommend using a serger if possible, and/or rolling all hems. Trimming the seams with pinking shears will also help prevent fraying.Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I would not sew it as directed again. I wouldn't recommend this pattern without the stated modifications. Conclusion:Whoever designed this pattern should be fired. It's ridiculous. They need a completely reworked rapunzel pattern that actually looks like the dress in the movie.

Not Simplicity's Best Pattern by Far
I made this costume for my daughter for Halloween and ended up making quite a few alterations. First, as other reviewers have said, the bodice runs small compared to other simplicity patterns for this age. I made this pattern in a size 3. My child is pretty slim and this bodice was going to fit snug on her. Since I didn't make a muslin (not doing that for a costume) and I had already cut the fabric, I just sewed the bodice with 1/4" seams instead of 5/8" and remembered to adjust for the lining and the sleeves. Also, as other reviewers have stated, this skirt is ridiculously long. My daughter is tall for her age and I still shortened the pattern by 4 inches. The best advice that I can give is to alter & shorten the pattern before you ever cut the fabric. Otherwise you have to shorten the overskirt, the skirt and the lining individually. Finally, I ended up deviating from the pattern with respect to the sleeves. I didn't like the straight sleeve so I added a ruffled sleeve instead. While you can create an adorable princess dress with this pattern, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners at all. This was very time consuming and I had a to make a lot of alterations and pattern deviations. I don't know if Simplicity was just in a hurry to get the pattern out in time for the holiday season, but I really hope they consider revision on this one.

Slightly below-average pattern, but does the job.
The bodice/top fits small. The skirt is exceptionally long. I've made it in two sizes for two very differently built girls and I found this to be the case for both. I was able to resize pretty easily. I've never encountered this in a pattern, usually it's all-over too big or too small, but not one piece too big and one piece too small. Also, a small complaint is that the dress looks like it was just another pattern taken that they turned purple and pink to "look" like Tangled's Rapunzel, and not TRULY a Disney's Tangled Rapunzel Dress. The fit is just a little wrong. Rapunzel's dress is more flowing and form fitting, whereas this pattern is more billowy-renaissance-princess. The colors on the front of the pattern aren't quite right other, but that's an easy fix by choosing the right fabric. Lastly, it's not a "quick sew" by any means, you do need some fairly good sewing knowledge. I would say it's for a moderate to high experience. All in all, my daughter does not care that it's "spot on" Disney's Tangled Rapunzel, so it does the job. I do wish the sizing was a little more consistent.

Great pattern and easy to follow
Great pattern and easy to follow. The bodice does cut small so I suggest cutting the next larger size. Also the fabric allowances are very large, you could get away with buying less of the skirt fabric.
