Does this product work well on nubuck?

Yes. But this product is not an industrial strength cleaner. It cleans light soil. You can't wait until the shoes are deeply marred with dark streaks and expect this product to clean all of the dark marks off. I clean my light colored suede or nubuck shoes every second time I wear them and they stay looking new. It is well worth the effort.

Is it safe and effective for Birkenstock suede footbeds?

So far I have used it on almost everything and I have had no problems. It very gentle on all materials as long as you use a very soft brush. It's worth the try so far I have not had any issues. I mainly use on all types of shoes and sometimes car interiors that are cloth or suede.

Why does it say not to saturate?

It's not intended for one to saturate with cleaner but rather use the foam from the shaken bottle. I personally use very little when cleaning my shoes.

will this cleaner remove an oil stain from timberland boots?

to some extent! I use my timberlands when I ride my motorcycle, and I have oil scuff marks near the toe because of the gear paddle, and I used this cleaner to clean the shoes, it did clean the stain and reduced it to just a hazy black spot.HTH
