MFC-J460DW works like a charm
First, at $110 as of May 2019, the price was hard to beat. The shipping time was excellent and arrived in bubble wrap to a level of slight comedy. Also included were free packing peanuts! Anyway, it arrived in excellent conditions.Secondly, connecting it to the wifi was a breeze. You simply press the settings button, then select the Network option, select WLAN (in my case), Setup Wizard, your wifi's name (SSID), then input your password. Easy Peezy.#NOTE# if the printer asks you if you want to update the firmware, DO NOT DO IT. The reason will become clear later in this review. To connect your computer (windows 10), you click on the cortana search bar, type printers, select 'printers & scanners', 'add a printer or scanner', and choose your MFC-J460DW. That's it.Now if, like me, your printing was ungodly-levels of slow, you need to install some different drivers. As another user stated(though with less detail), you must go to the brother website, click on the support tab, then 'driver downloads'. Enter 'mfc-j460dw' into the search box within the webpage and click on the result to go to a page that lets you select which driver you want based on your version of windows/OS. You're then brought to a webpage where you can choose what package to download. I chose, and I believe that you only really need, the 'Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for Local Connection' option (Im only using this printer on wifi and it works just fine). run the executable that you downloaded and it will install the necessary drivers for proper function.Almost done; now, you have to go back to that 'printers & scanners' window from earlier, click on the name of your printer (Brother MFC-J460DW Printer should be the default). From here click on 'printer properties', then the 'advanced' tab, then click on the 'new driver' option. A wizard will open, 'next' to continue, now you should have 2 boxes visible. On the left box find and select 'brother'. Then on the right-most box find and select 'Brother MFC-J460DW'. 'Next' your way to completion and that should be it! If this sounds complicated... it's not, it just feels that way because I went into step-by-step detail on how to complete the process. Finally, the ink. The whole reason i got this style of printer was to be able to use 'aftermarket/third-party' ink. And it works wonderfully! The exact version of ink I got is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HGH2ZAW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Remember that firmware update I talked about earlier? Well if you update the firmware there's a chance these third-party inks will not be read by the printer. With all of this I now have a reliable, modern, and fast printer/scanner with easy to access and CHEAP ink. Enjoy!

Functionality does not last.
I bought this printer to replace an old defunct hp printer. I compared several reviews and decided this one had most of the features I wanted, with a decent price and decent overall satisfaction. My only initial annoyance was it's default to fax tendency. Since then, with minimal to moderate use, it has continued to frustrate, with many minor issues and a few major ones. Print quality is okay, but the paper frequently gets messed up at the edges from where it feeds. No matter if I update the software/drivers/connections, I cannot get it to "scan to file". When I first bought it, it would connect to my computer (though it would take several minutes to do so), but now it spends several minutes trying to connect then quits. I can still scan, but only if I originate the request from my computer. The biggest issue I have with it is the 'automatic document feeder'. Again, when I first bought it, the document feeder could scan multiple pages at a time. Later it would have a few hiccups where two pages would get pulled through together and I would have to go back and re-scan the skipped pages. Now if I load more than one page in the adf, it will pull one through, scan it, then pull all of the others through in succession, treating them as though they are an infinitely long tail on the end of the first one. I've tried searching to see if there is a way to fix it. I've tried fanning the pages, staggering the pages, cleaning the feed wheels, etc. Nothing has worked. So now I have to manually load every single page (either onto the glass or into the adf) making sure I don't load the next one too quickly or the machine will just feed it all the way through without pause. Bottom line, if you want a scanner that lasts longer than a few years, keep looking.

Excellent features, SLOW PRINTING!
EDIT 10-6-2016:So i believe i've solved the inherent problem of slow printing with this printer. It was the printer port. Apparently with newer printers a new port technology, WSD can be used with certain Operating systems. I had a feeling that this was causing my slow printing issues described below and sure enough i was right. I switched the port to the standard TCP/IP (network wifi print) port and what once took 1 minute per page now takes 10 seconds for 2 pages!!! I've since modified my rating from 3 to 5 stars. I think this is a Windows issue and not a printer issue.--------------------------------------------ORIGINAL REVIEW:I recently bought this printer and notice like other reviewers that is very slow to print documents (1 page per minute. B/W text only). I have noticed though that it only prints slow from a Windows 10 computer. If i print from my MacBook Pro it prints much faster. I think it may be the drivers on the Windows 10 computers? It could be a DPI issue where by default its trying to print at a high DPI. I say this because i also notice when it prints from a Windows 10 computer vs my MacBook the print "noise" from the printer sounds different (When it prints from the Windows 10 computer it sounds like its trying to print more details per line vs the MBP). There isn't an option that i've found so far that lets me adjust the DPI settings for print jobs on the Windows computer. I can only adjust print quality which is set as Normal by default.I wonder if Brother were to look into the Win10 drivers maybe they could fix it? I"m tempted to just keep the device because 9/10 i will only be printing from my Macbook anyways. The printer itself is small and compact which is nice. Takes less space on a desk than my previous Canon MX310. The 4 ink cartridge system is much better also. I only will need to replace a single cartridge if needed. I love the LCD screen feature. I have no need for the Fax option but I don't like that it doesn't come with an Ethernet port. Not a deal-breaker but i'd take that over Faxing. The double-sided print feature is cool. According to the printer options, it also supports double-sided scanning too but i haven't used this feature yet (not sure if its auto or manual scanning). Setting up the wifi feature along with installing the printer for my 3 computers went smoothly.Overall I like this printer but will be a bit weary on the slow printing issue. I'll continue to test it to see if my theory on this being localized to Windows 10 computers is the case or not. But like i said i mostly will be printing from my MacBook so i could live with the super slow print jobs but for most people, that may be a deal breaker.
