is the cord water proof??

Hi Brian, YES absolutely it is water proof. You just have to make sure to create a 'DRIP LOOP' before it hits the wall socket. However, this bubble disc is ONLY the disc and light itself. you need to purchase the air-pump, and air-tube separately to create the bubbles. I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME before my purchase. GOOD LUCK.

Has anyone had any issues with the water flowing back into the electrical pump when the item is unplugged at night? I’m wanting to unplug it at night

Thank you for your inquiry, CiCi! You will need to install a check valve if you wish to have the air off at night. Or the pump itself has to be placed above the tank. Otherwise, water will definitely siphon back into the pump, destroying it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Can i use this as an alternative to a light with a 3.5 gallon tank?

It depends. It looks neat and is a very good product..have had mine for a few years at least with no problems..still going strong..tank would be dimmer than with a normal light definitely.
