Artec Fire Making Pump Drill Kit
Artec Fire Making Pump Drill Kit consists of pieces of unstained and unfinished wood. I know how to use a bow drill to make a fire and was looking for something easier for my kids to learn friction fire. The directions for the Artec Fire Making Pump Drill Kit are not in English but have illustrations, which made assembly relatively easy. I put mine together firmly and it stays together well. The pump drill is made to have interchangeable spindle end pieces which rub on the bottom hearth board; four interchangeable spindle end pieces are included with the kit. The hearth board pre-cut notches are too wide of an angle for my style and the hearth board is relatively small. The short cord which comes with it to support the board which goes up and down, was too short for me. I easily replaced it with a piece of paracord. When making fire by friction, the spindle end piece rubs against the hearth board, gets hot and creates black dust which collects in the notch of the hearth board. When there is a pile of dust, heat can accumulate and ignite a smoking ember. The ember is then placed in a tinder bundle and lightly blown on to increase the heat to ignite the tinder bundle. I made an ember easily and my 10-11 year-old children were able to make embers with a little practice. Unfortunately, the interchangeable spindle end piece wears down and each one is good for about two embers, which means the set is good for lighting eight fires. When you need replacement spindle tips or hearth boards, cedar wood works for friction fires, and it can be purchased at the local lumber yard. There are other types of wood which can be used for friction fire that can be found on the internet including yucca, cottonwood, basswood, boxelder, aspen and willow. The replacement spindle end needs to be carved to fit the square hole in the spindle. I am pleased with my purchase. The set can be used for many boy scout fires. I found a YouTube review[...]

Eh
Bottom circular weight kept coming loose from applying to much downward pressure while pumping. I fixed it by circling string directly below the hexagon circular weight. Not as good as the bow drill method. This up and down pump drill is hard to handle; rod keeps coming out of the hole. Get the bow drill method; you have more control.

Such a simple and fun fire making kit, for kids, adults, backyards or camping.
First lemme give it to you straight. What i received looks nothing like the picture; no wood finish, no designs, just plain wood. You might be asking yourself, "But Waltimus, why the Five stars then?!" To which i would reply: "Well, my reviewer friend, I gave this product Five stars, because it's amazing!" It's so simple, I love it.It brings the art and science of friction fires into the conversation. So simple to use. It breaks down easily and i was able to use it, and make a fire, within 5 minutes of opening it. It comes with everything you see. hearth board, centrifugal weight, spare spindle heads (which wear out really quick but can be made easily) and some hemp rope to be used as kindling.I spent the day out doors with my son playing with this, well done Japan, well done.

Should work much better & a whole lot faster
So, so. About what I expected. I'm going to make a break down model using steel & aluminum with a spot for a dowel inset. Should work much better & a whole lot faster.
