Fun for a while. Probably better for really young kids to help understand weather.
Very good idea but not very durable in use. Parts come off easily and kids lose interest quickly as action is not very engaging after the first 10 days. Unless you have highly variable weather patterns you won't get a lot of use. Short of Gale force winds you don't get much of a reading on here. My son is a weather fanatic. He watches the weather radar several times a day. Checks temp changes at sunrise, mid-day,evening, and at bedtime. He looks up the cloud types we have and loves to know wind speed and direction. He rarely if ever turns to this anymore. As I said after about 10 days he noticed that this was not so accurate even for rainfall because the rain has to be a direct hit or it will bounce off and after it gets fairly high (over half) the drops start pushing water out. It's really neat and a great idea, but it's just not constructed correctly or something. I am just not sure what it is. Anyway,he did really enjoy it for a couple of weeks but now he just cleans it once a month to get bugs, leaves, grass, etc out if it

Educational but still a toy...
This is a very educational toy about weather but improvements could be made by the manufacturer to mount on different surfaces such as on a fence, railing, pipe and etc. This item also should have a sliding electronic screen cover to block sunlight from attacking the digital screen and making it fade away. I will say however, this item did work for a few months as stated in their ad and that's why I still feel that it's an educational toy to introduce young minds into the wonderful world of weather and climate forecasting. Maybe a more advanced version of this product and product fixes would of kept my young daughter interested in weather but unfortunately, that ended when product stopped working and that was key...

Kids storm chaser
Such a great gift, our son is terribly afraid of storms so this kit is so great! It even comes with a badge and is even bigger than I expected. So far he loves it and is actually looking forward to the weather!!!

Another nicely designed item from Backyard Safari that just doesn't work
Another nicely designed item from Backyard Safari that just doesn't work. Today the pod said it was 104 degrees outside when it was actually 81 degrees. The wind gauge again is interesting, but really of no practical functionality. It's very disappointing that Backyard Safari doesn't put as much time into making it products actually work as expected, rather than concentrating on design and packaging.

Would have nice if it worked...
Was hoping this would help my 7yr old learn to not be so afraid of weather. Would probably have been a good learning tool, had it worked. I pit 2 brand new sets of batteries in it and the thing never even turned on. Sucks bc i already threw away the box so now its just trash.

a heads up
i returned this item thinking it didn't work and now i feel like an idiot (because it was my mistake that it wasn't working properly) So i ordered another one "new" and had the same thing happen to me again which was that the screen was not showing wind speed, had wrong temp, the on/off wouldn't work. So I was like no way i got two with the exact same problem so i took my rechargeable batteries out and put two new regular batteries in and the new one i have now is working fine meaning the one i returned was working too. I don't like that my mistake cost someone else money. So these summit weather pods work really well just don't use rechargeable batts. or if you do and its not working properly try a set of regular batts before returning it. This may also happen if you put batteries in it that don't have a full charge.

Well made, high value
bought it for a 7-year-olds birthday. He loves it. He has been fascinated with storms and tornados for awhile. It includes a handy guide showing different types of clouds and tips on weather. Unlike the photo the one we got had a digital readout and you must supply your own (2) AA batteries.
