Insteon 2448A7 Portable USB Adapter, White

My old PLM started hanging a lot and having issues. I started to replace it with a straight serial model since I have a free serial port on my server machine (I had been using the USB model). I figured it reduced failure points since I'd previously had the occasional issue with the special usb to serial drivers goofing up and requiring a reinstall. After I'd already placed the order for the other device, someone recommended this and said the benefit is it doesn't touch the power line network so it can't get knocked out or effected by noise on the lines or spikes and whatnot. I quickly ended that order and got this (which is cheaper by the way ;) ).It's been in place for about a month now and once I got it working and integrated into my automation software (PowerHome), everything works great. The only thing I had to do was rebuild the links and a little bit of tweaking to the software. I've not had a single issue other than one or two devices occasionally dropping off because they don't respond. The key here is that this is RF only. I only have 3 dual-band devices in my house, the rest are powerline only. So the signal has to be able to reach a dualband device, then propagate across the powerline network to the other devices. It works great except for one or two devices in weak spots. I intend to purchase a dualband switch to replace the main problem device and hopefully that will clear up everything.So far, it works great :)Update 9/23/2014:Just wanted to say this little guy is still going strong. Insteon took these out of stock sadly for a while, but it looks like they'll be back on their website starting in October. Might grab a spare just in case they remove them again, so if anything ever happens to it like a surge, I won't be left without one.Update 7/31/2016:Can't believe it's been 3 years since I switched to this. Everything is still working perfectly, there have been no issues with this adapter at all :)

I LOVE Insteon as a general rule. I have been using X10/Insteon in some form for nearly 20 years. However, this device is terrible.First, do heed the other reviews regarding range. I was within 10 feet of 3 other dual-band Insteon devices, but the 2448A7 would barely connect. Let me revise that, because what I observed was even more strange... actually, the 2448A7 seemed to be able to connect to those nearby Insteon dual-mode devices quite well. However, and I know this sounds bizarre, it could ONLY connect to those devices. Now, I know that bridging is inherent to the Insteon protocol and retransmission between RF and powerline should have been handled automatically by the Insteon modules themselves. But this unit truly only seemed to be able to communicate with those items it could reach directly via RF. In fact, when I installed a long USB extension and moved the 2448A7 around the house, it could then "see" the more nearby modules it couldn't see before. Strange, I know, but I assure you this was the behavior I experienced!I bought this to be an interface to the Indigo platform. To their credit, Indigo does acknowledge and control the 2448A7 right out of the box. I replaced it with the 2413U PowerLine USB interface and the difference is night and day. Near-instantaneous communications and programming with ALL of my Insteon devices, whether powerline, RF, or both. I also have a physical phase bridge installed on my breaker panel. So it's definitely the 2448A7 that is at fault.Giving it two stars because it will actually transmit some signals. But it is slow, has limited range, and appears to have some difficulty with bridged/bridging between RF and power line. Your mileage may vary, but stay far, far away!!

This seems like a great replacement for the Serial PML module, that always ends up dying after 2 years. I have an all wireless/dual band Insteon setup (4 switches and 3 thermostats). If you have just older power line only devices this will not work for you. Also FYI it has no set button so you need software to send the linking commands. It is basically a FT232R FTDI interface in front of the normal serial Insteon command set. Works fine with a linux or windows and I am actually using a USB host shield with an ESP8266 to talk to it and that is working great so far. (19200 Baud and 180ms for Latency).

Works perfectly 1 minute setup, also very good range. Configured with indigo software controller in a mac.Avoid usb cables.
