Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2TB Desktop USB 2.0 External Hard Drive with Capacity Gauge

The Seagate GoFlex Desktop Drive is a neatly designed, compact external drive, at an extremely competitive price for 2TB capacity.. just what I required for backing up important data and it takes up very little desktop space.. I can't comment on the quality of the manufacturer's bundled backup software, since I use Apple's Time Machine app with this drive.One very important note at the time of writing (11/04/2011) however, is that Amazon suggest you consider buying the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex FireWire 800 Upgrade Cable with this drive.. BE WARNED, the connector (although it looks the same) does not fit.. this drive cannot therefore be run without an external power supply as a portable drive.The correct Firewire adaptor required for this device is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desktop Adapter (USB 2.0,Firewire 800).. the same applies for the USB 3 adaptor, the correct model for this drive is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 Desktop Adapater.Amazon really should make this clear, rather than putting a big picture of the incompatible cable format (portable GoFlex models only) in the product description section for this drive and listing the two items as 'frequently bought together' since this is misleading.10th February 2012, Review Update -Hi JTM,Only just spotted your comment and apologise for not responding earlier.I have not experienced any over-heating issues with my drive, however I do not leave it running 24/7. Most External Hard Drives (without a fan fitted inside the casing) will become noticeably warm after extended use.I have not made use of the software you mention, since it seems extremely unlikely that loading software into my computer, would then enable me to monitor the operating temperature of an external drive, without also attaching physical temperature sensors.. so I call shenanigans.. particularly since your Amazon identity appears to have no further profile attached.Security Note - All readers are strongly advised against random recommendations of free, downloadable 'diagnostic software'.. it is nearly always a front for malware.

This HUGE hard drive came from Maplin within 24 hours (even though delivery was free) and took less than 5 minutes to unpack and set up. This included installation of the Seagate desktop which allows USB backup (Memeo free backup software included). You can either use Memeo to back up your complete computer (what you include and exclude is decided by you) or you can drop and drag individual files for one off backup or transfer. If you want to use the drive purely to back up your computer, then as long as it is connected to this hard drive, the Memeo software will work in the background copying every file and folder you have including any changes you make to individual files and folders (i.e. it make multiple copies should you need to retrieve a file you changed by accident).The drive at 2TB is massive so would be great for archiving video or large photo files and while this Seagate drive is new to me, my other Seagate drives (I have 12 of them in total - Mainly "Go Flex" drives) have all lasted at least 2 years and are still going strong so I see no reason this one should not give many years of service.All in all, highly recommended.Update 29/04/12.I have noticed a lot of comments saying the Memeo software makes the drive unusable and while it does slow your computer down to a crawl while doing the initial back-up, once done it makes no noticeable difference at all. By definition, if you have bought this drive you probably have a huge amount of data to back-up, I had about 300GB which took 10 hours to back-up, but once the initial copy was done, the back-up's are done automatically in the background every time you save a file (be it new or modified). I have used Memeo software for years so know to let me laptop back-up overnight (don't forget to turn your power-saving settings off), but once you have done the initial copy, you won't regret it!

I needed a large external drive for some storage of my ever increasing number of files and this one looked like it fitted the bill. After some research on the net, the one thing this product gets critisized for is the pre-loaded software but other than that it gets good reviews.Well my review is going to be another one of those. The drive itself is very quiet indeed. You wouldn't even know it was on at all if it wasn't for the power light glowing away. I didn't even bother trying out the software as it's clearly rubbish so I just formatted the drive for use and since then it has performed well and seems to be quick enough at moving files around for my liking. Obviously Seagate designed this drive to be used with the pre-loaded software and as such it doesn't have an on/off switch on the unit because the software is supposed to turn it off when the computer turns off. This is a pain as I have to remember to unplug it when I'm finished what I'm doing. If I forget that and try and boot up my PC later on....the PC freezes half way through POST which makes me realise what I've done. This is no fault of the GoFlex though, it is down to my PC setup. The other thing that doesn't work without the software is the capacity lights on the front of the GoFlex. Ok that's not a big deal to me but annoying none the less.So all in all, I would recommend this GoFlex to anyone but it's a shame Seagate didn't think about how the drive would operate if the customer didn't want to install the software. Other than that, it's quick and quiet and so far it's been reliable so I'm happy.Actually there is one more thing I was pleased about....and that is that Amazon didn't use HDNL to deliver it. I was expecting the usual intimidating hoodlum of an HDNL delivery driver but no, it was a pleasant Yodel delivery man. What a joy that was!

Its a great external drive for extra storage and back up.Pre-installed software for automatic backup of your selected drivesand syncronisation of drives even folders.It comes with a few onlineperks offered by Memeo.I wasn't able to get USB 3 adapter shipped to mycountry but I notice data transfer is still faster than when amtransferring to other external drives despite using the sameport. Its silent and smaller than i expected so a can carry itin my Laptop bag.Its light enough to have qualified for customsexception in my country. I was a little uncomfortable with the factthat it stands on the table but its stable and never topples overwhen the table is shaken.I was impressed that even with the pre-installed software i have over 1.8TB available to use.It doesn'theat up and the indicator lights showing the capacity and used spaceare extra qualities. The price was good and am happy with thisproduct.The fact that it can easily be upgraded to USB 3 is greatI find the external power supply a bother especially if there isarent enough sockets. But this is true of all external drives ofthis capacity. It looks great too I hope it lasts.

Lo utilizzo come disco di backup di time machine per il mio macbook pro, ma anche come spazio di archiviazione per i progetti imovie e altri documenti. Ho anche creato una seconda partizione per avere una copia avviabile del sistema operativo del mio mac, in caso succedesse qualcosa di catastrofico.Nessun problema finora, anche se sarebbe meglio la base con la connessione firewire, che renderebbe il tutto più veloce e mi restituirebbe una preziosa porta usb.Tra l'altro la base è utile per controllare i dischi sata di portatili inchiodati (mi capita di mettere a posto pc di amici).

Le moins cher dans une marque connue au jour de mon achat !Installation ultra rapide. Logiciel de sauvegarde de l'ordinateur très simple à installer.Produit très silencieux. Installé juste à côté de mon UC, je n'entends pas la différence !Un peu vexé de l'avoir vu en vente flash à 20 € la semaine suivante mais bon..Enfin, je regrette l'absence d'interrupteur permettant de ne se servirde ce DD externe qu'en cas de besoin. (Sauvegardes et films dans mon cas !)Mais je crois que le DD avec inter. sont une denrée bien rare.

Nun ist diese Platte seit einem Monat im Backup Betrieb mit TimeMachine und weiteren manuellen Backups an meinem iMac.Einfach neu formatiert, Time Machine eingerichtet und schwupp entfaltet diese Platte ihre Power.Zugegeben habe ich sie auf FW800 hochgehievt, da zum Einen sonst mein FW800 Steckplatz weiterhin ungenutzt geblieben wäre und ich auf diese Weise keinen zusätzlichen USB-Steckplatz besetzen muss. Aus Bequemlichkeit sind mein Mikrophon und Midiboard nämlich dauerhaft angeschlossen.Die Seagate GoFlex Desk gibt mir das sichere Gefühl, dass, wenn hier mal etwas schief läuft, ich eine Sicherung von allem habe, was ich gemacht habe.Platztechnisch ist sie ja nun einmal nicht gerade wenig bestückt für einen einzelnen Arbeitsplatz.Sie ist der Austausch für einen BlackArmour NAS, das mir das Kabel ersparen sollte.Diese Lösung kommt Geschwindigkeitstechnisch aber doch eher an meine Bedürfnisse und an die vieler anderer Anwender, denke ich, auch.Zwar ist das Design nicht so schön, wie die BlackArmour, aber die GoFlex Desk verwende ich eher verborgen.Bei mir funktionieren die Leuchtanzeigen übrigens tadellos. Man könnte sie zwar ausschalten. Aber so weiss ich, wann sie eingeschaltet ist.Übrigens schaltet sie sich auch nicht von alleine einfach ein und aus. Sie startet mit meinem Mac und schaltet sich aus, wenn ich entweder den Mac wieder ausschalte oder die Festplatte auswerfe.Mein Fazit (in Kombination mit dem FireWire800-Adapter)+gute Verarbeitung+hohe Geschwindigkeit+Leuchtanzeige zur Orientierung+Leise+sehr leicht. Somit für den Transport durchaus geeignet+-grenzwertiger Preis (durch den Adapter)+-übertönt die Lüfter des iMac bei höherer Last+-sehr klobig im Vergleich zu Vorgängermodellen.+-blind sehr kompliziert zu docken; ist aber zu vernachlässigen
