I think so. Any light plugged into the device should work.

Is this good for a 90+ year old?

I would not think so as the noise (clap) to turn on can be very inconsistent. I have tried to clap on and it will not work standing just feet away but it has also came on when my dog barked outside the room in hallway. Very sensitive but to just the right sound it likes.

Will this work if it is behind the couch?

yes, it should work. however it all depends on the acoustics of your room. sometimes it’s sensitive and other times you need to be loud with your claps
