Great Option for the Budding Musician
I purchased this guitar for my 5 year old daughter who runs on the small side (10th percentile size and weight). She received a toy ukulele last year and was showing interest in learning that or guitar (I play guitar). The ukulele is simply a toy and does not remain in tune and I did not want to have to learn a new instrument in order to teach her. I decided to look into small scale guitars, however, I was only interested in steel string real instruments. I looked for days at all of the acoustic style instruments available here and other places. There was simply nothing that was within my price range that I was confident in. The struggles I had with acoustic was that tone woods/laminates, bracing and glue jobs had to be good in order to produce the quality that I wanted (not really available in this size or price range). I decided to move towards the electric end as they would tend to be more durable and less reliant on materials and craftsmanship than an acoustic style. Further, it would be easier for my daughter to create quality sound from the electric form with lighter strings and electronics to pick up the slightest sounds. I looked at Mini Squires but even those were too big for my little girl. Even without a review of this item, I decided that my options were limited and that I was willing to take the risk on an unknown product. The specs were all within the range that I was looking for and I liked the single coil stratocaster style all for a great price.I am very pleased with the product that we received. All of the important items work perfectly (tuners, bridge, pickup, nut cuts, fingerboard, frets). One thing to be aware of is that the short scale instruments need to be tuned higher than traditional tuning in order to get the tuners to work best and for best play quality. The string spacing is as it should be and the majority of the frets are well filed. The maple fingerboard is nice, the finish on the body is flawless, the action is great along. There is a trussrod if necessary, although the neck alignment was set perfect. Nothing came worn, warped or flawed and there is no fret buzz when tuned up appropriately. We paired this with the Fender Mini Tonemaster amp, which I recommend highly with this setup (for a child). Bottom line, we love this and am very pleased with the form, function and quality that we received. For best results tune to A-D-G-C-E-A. You play this the same as a traditional guitar and one can play along with a capo on the 5th fret traditional tuning. This is standard for all short scale guitars (alternative tuning options are available).I rate this 5 stars; however, post 4 stars because the rating system is subjective and I would not want to give false expectations to someone that may be a bit more picky. The few minor things that I would note are as follows: The finish on the neck is weak - There is enough poly to seal the wood (I think) but it is very thin. Also, the sanding job on the neck could be better but does not affect quality or playability. I do not find this to be problematic as if I get so inclined I can improve the finish myself and was more concerned with the quality of music not the overall finish. Also, along the same line, a couple of the high frets (20s) could have been filed better. My daughter will not be playing in this range for some time and I can fix that as well. That is it as far as I can tell so am very pleased with the item. I think it will last her a long time (plus it is fun for me as well!).

the pickup was pretty good, but that's about it
could not tune this guitar. I've playing since 1990. the fret bars weren't crowned, so even if I could have tuned it, I wouldn't have kept it anyway, that's how sharp the fret bars were. It was definitely eye candy, the pickup was pretty good, but that's about it, was unplayable.

Not too sbabby!
Wow! first impression is good. Out of the box, it needs some work in my opinion. It is completely playable right away, but it would be ideal to have a compete setup done. the fret ends are sharp, but easily fixed. Throw away junk strings that come on it, I put 10 to 52 Guage back on. It has a maple neck with maple fret board, which is nice. Overall it is a very decent instrument. With what there is to work with, I would pay 100 bucks for this guitar any day.

VERY SOLID INSTRUMENT
THIS GUITAR IS A VERY WELL-BUILT INSTRUMENT. I AM AMAZED WITH THE QUALITY FOR A $62 GUITAR. THE NECK AND HEAD IS A BEAUTIFUL, TIGHT GRAINED, ROCK-HARD CHUNK OF MAPLE WITH A NATURAL SMOOTH OIL FINISH FOR EASY MOVEMENT UP AND DOWN THE NECK. I WANTED A HALF SIZE ELECTRIC GUITAR FOR MY FIVE YEAR OLD BECAUSE THE ACTION IS MUCH EASIER FOR LITTLE HANDS THAN AN ACCOUSTIC. GUITAR CENTER, MUSICIAN'S FRIEND, ETC. ONLY CARRY 3/4 AND FULL SIZE GUITARS. I HAD PLANNED TO BUY THE SQUIRE (3/4 SIZE)THROUGH GUITAR CENTER FOR $100 EVEN THOUGH IT WAS TOO LARGE.I WAS NERVOUS TO TRY THIS ONE WITHOUT FIRST SEEING IT BECAUSE IT SEEMED TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. I ORDERED IT BECAUSE IT WAS THE CORRECT SIZE AND AM SO GLAD I DID. THE QUALITY OF THIS GUITAR IS DEFINITELY COMPARABLE WITH THE SQUIRE. THIS INSTRUMENT ALSO HAS A TRUSS ROD, TUNERS, ETC. WORK GREAT. I ORDERED THE LITTLE HONEYTONE AMP FOR $20 WHICH I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND FOR THE MONEY.I AM A MUSIC TEACHER AND AM THINKING OF BUYING SEVERAL OF THESE TO HAVE AS RENTAL INSTRUMENTS. I DON'T THINK YOU COULD GO WRONG BUYING THIS GUITAR. ALSO, AS A TEACHER, I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF FITTING THE CHILD WITH THE CORRECT SIZE INSTRUMENT. IT MAKES LEARNING SO MUCH MORE DIFFICULT (SOMETIMES IMPOSSIBLE) ON A TOO-LARGE INSTRUMENT. THIS ONE FITS ALL MY KIDS WELL: 5YRS, 7YRS, AND 9YRS. AND IS EASY TO PLAY.NOTE: I FIRST TUNED IT STANDARD EADGBE AND IT RAN PRETTY SHARP. I THEN TUNED IT UP (COMMON TO NEED TO DO WITH SMALLER SCALED INSTRUMENTS-SEE PREVIOUS REVIEWS) AND IT'S PRETTY TRUE.

The guitar was a good buy. However
The guitar was a good buy. However, be very careful of frets as they fret ends are were sharp. The fret board wood tends to shrink with moisture loss during climate changes. This is very common. My DH filed down the sharp fret ends and it turned out fine. My little granddaughter was able to "play" (she's learning) her guitar without harm to her little fingers.

This is not a toy.
I purchased this guitar for one of my grandsons. After a little fret filing and setup, this is a nice guitar. Several of the frets were very sharp but easily corrected with a little bit of filing. The supplied strings were too light so I replaced them with a set of Regular Slinkys. I was able to lower the action and set the intonation with no problems. I am very pleased with this guitar and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another.
