Great price, quick shipping, would buy from again
Both my friend and I upgraded to this receiver in the last few months. Mine is replacing an Onkyo TX-SR603x, which has been flawless for the past 2.5 years and featured component video upconversion. This unit appears to be somewhat futureproof, with HDMI 1080p switching/upconversion, True HD, DTS-ES and Dolby EX. The TX-SR605 appears to be just as solid as the 603x. The sound is crisp and clear and I believe even better. Setup was simple and flexible, though I'm sure it helps to have owned two previous Onkyo units. My only complaint: I wish it hsd three HDMI inputs instead of two (or that the TX-SR805 wasn't $300+ more for the third HDMI connection) but I solved that problem for less than $100 with the Oppo HM-31 HDMI switch. I didn't even need to reprogram my Harmony 880 remote. Great bang for your buck -- this is a bargain at $350 with the features it packs. Onkyo TX-SR605S 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver)

This would be a great receiver if it actually worked
I returned this unit for 4 major problem, and I will start the search again.1 The unit crashes at normal volume levels using hdmi2 The component switching does not work once the receiver warms up3 HDMI audio is very low4 The unit shipped with old firmware requiring shipping out of town on my dime.I can't tell if I have a bad unit, or if it is just bad design. Onkyo's customer service stinks. That's reason enough not to get another sent out. If I got a new receiver from amazon, I'd still have to get the firmware updated at my expense. This is my first and last Onkyo purchase. That seemed to make no difference to them.It takes me hours to get a new receiver set up. The jerk at their customer service said that it takes him 5 minutes...The thermal problems are the biggest problem though. The unit crashes at volume 75 which is about where I'd run it for a movie. The temperature outside the case was 100 degrees in my 68 degree house. There are a lot of people that like this receiver, but I suspect that they haven't tried all the things that I did.

Not what I thought it would be
First of all, I thought that it would work when I got it. I don't know if it was drop kicked all the way to my home by UPS, or if it was just defective from the factory? But either way, it didn't work when it arrived. The second unit worked as stated, however I am not happy with the volume of this product. I have owned Onkyo for MANY years now, in fact this unit replaced my 4th Onkyo receiver of the past 12 years. Each one claimed to have more RMS wattage per channel than the last one, but using the same speakers on the last two units, this one is FAR from putting out the volume that the old one did. (It is a 505 series I think..? I can't remember right now.) It supposedly only had 75 watts per channel, and there was NO WAY I could crank it up watching a movie and not break glass in my living room. So the normal setting for movie watching was between 45-50 on the digital readout. With this one, I have to set it to a MINIMUM of 65-75% just to get the results of the 40% level I got from the last receiver. I tested it and cranked it up to its full power of 100%. I was totally shocked!! I am used to Onkyo having to be turned up past 50% power to get really earth moving movie watching effects in DTS, but NORMALLY in the other receivers I have owned in the past, once you hit the 70-75% range you were DONE. It was as loud as any normal person would ever need or want. This receiver however does not even get near that level at a full 100%!! Disappointed does not even begin to describe my feelings of this new 605 model. The first one shows up dead, then the second one is barely loud enough to listen to. I am using a 5.1 sound set up, not a 7.1, as very few movies are actually using that format as yet, and I have a "self powered" 500 watt sub. The speakers I am using are Onkyo as well, and I have used them for at least two receivers, so the only thing that changed was the receiver. I will keep it, I may amp it in some external way, but I just don't have the time to research a new unit. I spent MANY hours on line doing just that to see if I needed the 705 or the 805, but almost everyone seemed to be very happy with this unit with a lot less heat problems than the other two. After hearing it, I am REALLY glad I didn't spend the extra money for the other two units, as I assume that they would have the same power problem this one does. This WILL be my LAST Onkyo unit. I don't know what I will move to next, but what ever Onkyo offers will not be one of my choices, I am VERY sorry to say.

Good price - couple of sore spots
Firstly, got a great price for the unit a $332 and free shipping. This unit has a couple of problems for me though: 1) there is no switched power receptacle for the sub-woofer to plug in (hence sub-woofer stays on all the time); 2) unit distorts picture from analog VCR when fast forwarding making it hard to know when you get to your spot (skipping commercials etc); 3) unit seems to delay the signal enough to create echoes when you turn on a TV to the same channel; 4) Some functions can't be done from remote (like station presetting); 5) There is no record select making it difficult if not impossible (I haven't figured it out yet) to record from one unit to another (eg: DVD to separate VCR) - my prior switch had a video select and record select in addition to selecting the input source (the record select would allow you to select an source for output to the units that can record).Don't have an HD TV yet, so can't vouch for the HDMI upconvert logic etc.Mute and volume buttons could be placed a little better on remote since they're used the most.
