100th anniverary on Nov 8th
As someone who's been a Rupert fan all his life [Learned to read from the '73 annual and have since collected all but original copies of '36-45] I really expected MORE or a least a page or so on the history of the character for the 100th Anniversary instead of some really weak story where 1920 Rupert meets 2020 Rupert, there's not even a MENTION of Mary Tourtel's name and half the annual is 90s John Harrold stuff, REALLY that's the best they could do with 85 annuals and other unpublished stories to choose from.....

Classic stories great, new story a disaster.
The reprinted works in this book, by Alfred Bestall and John Harrold, are a lovely, fitting tribute to Rupert’s 100th birthday. Sadly the effect is besmirched by the travesty which is “Rupert and the Time Machine” which is a poorly conceived, clumsily written and disappointingly illustrated new story. Featuring the idea that Rupert has actually LIVED for 100 years and is aware of that fact, it’s staggeringly inept and utterly out of context. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and tell myself not to read it!! The cover art is likewise very poor compared to the heyday of Rupert under Bestall and Harrold.

Compilation better than new
With the advent of John Harrold leaving the annuals, Stuart Trotter has tried but not really succeeded to reach this standard. As a result, one story is from him, the rest, although some would say it's a cop-out, are taken from old annuals. This decision has meant some brilliant artwork from aforementioned John Harrold and also Alfred Bestall. One story by Stuart Trotter which really is a good one and most innovative. Linking the style of Mary Tourtel with a Blue Jumper Rupert with the later red jumper Rupert from Bestall and Harrold I think works really well. Well done to the publisher for making this tough decision, but ultimately coming up with a good and very readable annual.

Centenary Celebration
This is a most suitable Annual to celebrate 100 years of Rupert's Adventures and the 85th Rupert Annual. As usual there are a range of seasonal tales and puzzles with the only new story being a meeting of the Mary Tourtel 1920 Rupert and the 2020 Stuart Trotter Rupert. Both Ruperts are coloured and illustrated appropriately and both appear on the front cover of the Annual which is surely the most attractive and appealing cover for over a decade.

A MUST for children every Christmas!
What can you say about the new Rupert Annual that hasn't been already said many times before? Rupert lives on and is fit and well, despite surviving his original creator, Mary Tourtel, and his most famous writer/illustrator, Alfred Bestall. Many writers and illustrators have joined the Rupert ranks since their time, and these days, the new Rupert annuals are composed of a selection of old Bestall and Jon Harrold stories, mixed with most excellent new adventures by the best of the new illustrators and writers of the day! Always good value and long may Rupert's adventures continue!
