Emily is Masterpiece Doll Co's "Masterpiece"
Masterpiece Dolls are made in China to the artist/company specs. The dolls range up to 48" (Emily is 46") and no other modern dolls that I know of are made this size. Only the larger Annette Himstedt dolls which are discontinued like "Annalisa" compare. Though the German/Spain made Himstedts are top notch with blown glass eyes, human hair and superior vinyl, they (were) also $600.-$1000. plus for the 30" range and Annalisa was about $1500. In the secondary market even used they are about the same price or higher...Masterpiece Dolls range from $250.-$325. and for that price they are a steal. My main complaint with MD (and some of Himstedts too was that they looked "doll-like" Annalisa was one of the few exceptions, and Emily is prob. the most realistic doll Mastepiece has made, though some are close.Another thing I like about MD is that they are a full vinyl body whereas Himmmies had stuffed cloth mid sections. The joints on Himstedts are a little more posable, but they also have exposed screws. MD are more like posable mannequins. As a posed display doll they are more than adequate, and the clothing, though not as unique as Himstedt in construction and detail, are as least as good as children's clothing from mid-priced dept. stores. The synthetic hair feels soft and natural, the eyes are my biggest concern as they are plastic, and not as "natural" though unless you get an inch away, they look fine. I have heard that they are prone to cracking, but never had that problem. The details of this life-size and moderately priced doll are wonderful. Realistic sculpted face, ears, and even the nails on the hands and feet have cuticles, and look real. The eyebrows are painted but the dolls have both upper and lower actual (synthetic) lashes like high the priced dolls. some owners have even "reborn" them to make then even more realistic, but out of the box they look great, and you would swear, esp. in Emily's case, that she is a real 5-6 year old girl.If you want a child companion (doll) but don't have mega bucks, Masterpiece dolls will fill the bill. I did hear from one doll person that the while the outer layer of vinyl is fine, there is an inner layer which is inferior, however, only time will tell how they hold up. (I have quite a few "Patti Playpal dolls from 1959-60" and though manufactured as a play doll, still look like new if unplayed with 60 years later. If MD last even 1/2 that long that would be more that you could ask for... Emily so far, with her natural, serene face is the "masterpiece" of Masterpiece Dolls. If you don't try to compare a $300. doll to a $3000. doll, you will be very happy.
