A newly restored collection of previously released (and no longer available) Knappertbusch best sellers from our catalog. Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 first released on Music & Arts CD-257 (1987); Symphony No. 4 on CD-249 (1987); Symphony No. 7 on CD-209 (1986), and Symphonies 4 through 9 in boxed set CD-1028 (1998), which included a different version of Symphony No. 3. Jeffrey Lipscomb wrote of the previous edition, CD-1028, in his .com review: "Kna was one of the great Bruckner interpreters - he was unique in conveying this music's earthy, almost primeval side. Kna was a stubborn advocate of the so-called `revised' editions (Kluge's notes make a compelling argument for them)." And Tony Duggan wrote of the same set in Music-Web International: "This superb collection of Knappertsbusch at his best in Bruckner should not be missed. It offers fascinating insights into how Bruckner used to be perceived and played, and can teach us a lot even today." Restored and remastered in 2011 by Aaron Z. Snyder.

Knappertsbusch's echt-Bruckner....
Whatever you do, make sure that you avoid the non-verified purchase reviews written by Bernard O'Hanlon and Philoctetes - utterly wrong-headed and misleading... pay them no heed. The fact that Philoctetes has the audacity to question the retail price of the box-set is laughable; he hasn't a verified purchase to his name! This Knappertsbusch/Bruckner box-set provides a fascinating insight into Knappertsbusch's art which will prove educational, delivering musical edification in abundance. Knappertsbusch was an exceptionally gifted Brucknerian, of that there is no doubt. Purchase this box-set and experience Knappertsbusch delivering edge-of-the-seat performances - this is high art! Of course, one must accept that the antiquated source material used for the digital remasters isn't perfect, however, sound quality - monophonic - of the Music & Arts transfers is very good indeed. Philoctetes doesn't own the set and relies on hearsay... misleading and unreliable, to say the least. And Philoctetes' commenting on Bernard O'Hanlon being the self-proclaimed head of the "Australian Knappertsbusch Association" is neither here nor there. All self-respecting - and respectable! - Knappertsbusch admirers will consider this box-set a necessary acquisition. Enjoy the music.

Enjoyable Bruckner from a bygone age.
I really like this box of Bruckner symphonies conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch. I know the other reviewer is critical of the sound, describing it as flat, but I don't find it to be unlistenable. You've just got to accept the limitations of older recordings; I find that if the performance is good enough to hold your attention your ears tends to automatically adjust to the more limited sound range.

Touchant

Not so nice!!!
