Best NAS I have used
Over the years, I have used several NAS devices for my home network, primarily used for backup and media sharing. DLink device with both provided and custom firmwares, home-built machines and scrapped machines with various Linux or Unix flavors both general and NAS-tailored. Usually my approach has been doing the most affordable thing I can get away with. When my latest hardware began to fail, I decided to spend a bit more money and try something that was better quality and designed for what I'm doing. This NAS enclosure is perfect for my home. 4 external drive bays is plenty for me. The enclosure is not too big, and nearly silent. FreeNAS (now TrueNAS) with ZFS is really nice. I am doing a simple mirroring setup for redundancy, but ZFS provides many more sophisticated options. It has officially supported plugins for my two main needs: SyncThing and Plex. Plus several other officially supported plugins and many community supported plugins for just about anything I think I will ever need. Plus the ability to run nearly anything that works on FreeBSD in a "jail". Scheduled ZFS snapshots replace the manual snapshots I was previously doing with a home-grown rsync-based script. I had a bit of a learning curve with ZFS, but by doing a little reading and following some basic guides, I was able to configure exactly what I needed. I doubt I'll ever need all 4 Ethernet ports, as the virtual addresses that are assigned to my various jails/plugins is more than sufficient.I originally chose the TrueNAS Mini E (with 8GB RAM), but ended up ordering the E+ (with 16GB RAM) because it shipped sooner. I think 8GB would have been plenty for everything I am doing, but I am impressed that TrueNAS is using a significant portion of the extra RAM as a cache for ZFS, so it is not going to waste.
