The Royalist Revolution: Monarchy and the American Founding

The book's premise is more nuanced then the shocking title.
I highly recommend this book. But I don't like how Nelson often misrepresents his own thesis in Interviews and Speeches you'll find on YouTube.Basically he promotes it sounding like he's arguing the Patriots no longer qualified as Whigs, while within the Book itself he makes clear this was an internal Whig dispute. This mistake in how he promotes it has the potential to turn off some from buying the book if they already know how obviously absurd it is to pretend the Patriots weren't Whigs. All the leading Colonist sympathizers in London were also the leading Whig figures of the time, William Pitt The elder, Horace Walpole, Rockingham, Shelburne, Adam Smith, Edmund Burke and Charles James Fox. While the Prime minister who refused to compromise with them was a Tory. The Whig precedent for still supporting strong Executive prerogatives even a Veto can be found in Locke himself.Arguing that parliament has no Authority over the Colonies did not mean opposing Parliament in concept, it was about the colonists wanting a Parliament that represented them or they had representation in.But you could also be Anti-Parliamentarian from the Left rather then the Right, because Parliament was not actually Democratically Representing all the population, even the House of commons only represented the Wealthy Land Owners. Even wanting a strong Executive leader was not inherently a rejection of the English Revolution when you remember Oliver Cromwell. James Wilson one of the advocates for a Strong Presidency Nelson talks about also wanted the president to be directly Elected by Popular Vote and wanted the right to Vote not to be limited to Property owners.

Description not accurate.
Description failed to mention how many pages the notes and bibliography made up as part of the page count. I returned the book after looking how smaller the text of the book actually was. I don't believe I have ever returned a book.
