Does this model have a round filter above the dust canister ?

Yes it does. It’s a sponge circular filter that needs washing regularly and above that is a further filter that I have discovered also needs washing. I made a couple of spare sponge filters out of a piece of foam to use when other one is drying. This vacuum cleaner loses suction quite quickly unless you keep on top of cleaning the filters.

Is this effective on carpets?

It is ok for a low tufted carpet- I bought the vacuum for its light weight.

Where can I get a replacement for the foam filter? (I've borrowed this from a friend, washed the filters & my dog got hold of the foam bit & chewed it

could to please tell me how many tool attachments it should have i have one the thin one for getting into corners should there be one for the sofa

You should have one long piece that separates into two parts, button on the side needs to be pushed in. One part is for corners and edges, the other part for upholstery, curtains etc.
