Just what I needed when I needed it!
I'm so grateful that I selected this book. I had searched for many books about the Daniel fast but I was led to purchase this one. I was actually 2 weeks into my fast when I decided that I needed help to do it correctly. I thought it was too late to jump in since the book was meant to be done before the fast. My husband and I did it last year so we weren’t completely new to this but we wanted more out of the experience. We had the food restrictions down but with needed to feed our spirits even more. Our fast ended yesterday 1/27/24 but I feel led to extend it for 3 more days. My husband is extending his fast with me. We both feel great and have lost a considerable amount of weight and gained a considerable amount of of faith. We will not go back to our old ways. We’ve always been Christians from a young age but this has really helped us desire an even closer relationship with God. Thank you for your obedience to Gods call, you are really are helping people with the heart to learn and grow in the faith!

Insightful and useful
I like the explanations around the spiritual reasons for fasting. The recipes are great and cover all different dishes from breakfast through dinner, cracker recipes, and salad dressings. The meal planning suggestions are great too!

I highly recommend this book if you’re doing the Daniel Fast. Susan explains the Daniel Fast, explains why we do it, how to do it, the benefits of doing it, along with tons of recipes and daily devotionals to go along with your fast.

Why do we "fast" or limit selections of foods and beverages?
Susan Gregory's book is based on the life of Daniel, as recorded in the Bible. Daniel and a group of young Israelis of royal family were taken captive by the Babylonians in about 587 BC after the destruction of the Jewish temple. These young Israelis were to be trained to serve as palace slaves and the King generously provided food and wine from the non-kosher "king's table." The "Daniel Fast" is based on Daniel's choice of a vegan diet during his captivity.Almost all of us have dieted or "fasted" in some way or another, and most of us have "failed" in our diets. The author states this is not a diet, but should be treated as a spiritual quest, with no pass/fail if circumstances or medical reasons prevent following the "Daniel fast" exactly as suggested. The recipes included in the book, are quite helpful (taste good.)

Experience the "Alive" Sensation, the Physical-to-Spirtual Connection
More than we may readily admit to, our physical condition impacts our spiritual and emotional health. The Daniel Fast is a tool which leads the reader to a thoughtful and well-planned blend of body-to-spirit awareness designed with a spiritual purpose in mind. Scripture references highlight different spiritual disciplines that require adhering to and purposed endeavor. One of these, the discipline of fasting, is often mentioned. Depending on one's background, the person may have participated in fasting or they may not have. If not, this is a whole new opportunity to facilitate growth in the inner person through denying self of certain foods and drinks. Susan Gregory offers this book as a guide for a form of partial "fasting," a fast that allows the foods eaten by Daniel and the three Hebrew boys during their initial period of Babylonian captivity. For spiritual reasons, these young men refused to eat the King's food and drink. Instead, they drank water and ate pulse, any seed-bearing food (vegetables, fruits, and grains). They fared very well. As Gregory explains, a true "fast" is a relationship of denying food or drink for the purpose of a spiritual goal. The Daniel Fast incorporates devotionals, biblical background, a food list, and recipes. It is easy to read but serious in intent. My church ladies have participated in the Daniel Fast two times and are eager to do it again. They also purchased the workbook which works well as a compliment study. This is an excellent group activity. We saw much improvement in our physical health during the fast and also noticed a sharpness in our spiritual side as we completed the study. All the women on the fast felt more energy, clearer mind alertness, and felt a greater sense sense of well-being during The Daniel Fast. They are determined to continue eating healthier by choosing to prepare and eat health building foods as part of their daily diets. This is an exceptional opportunity to get a handle on the negative influences of processed foods and sugars on our bodies. It truly is an amazing month-long, revitalizing make-over. It works best when done with a partner or group. There was so much joy and excitement in the group. The ladies were excited about feeling better, losing a few pounds, and gaining spiritual insights, with much more buy-in by the participants than I have ever experienced before in leading women's studies. . .which is saying a lot.

daniel fast
This book has its basis in Christianity - the book of Daniel where he and his friends refuse to eat the food sacrificed to other gods, instead they ask to eat their own food - mainly vegan and not sacrificed - for a period of 21 days then to be reconsidered according to their health. The book has recipies, meal plans and devotional exercises for 21 days although it makes clear that you can use some or all of it, thus if you are not a Christian you can still gain through following the diet itself. At least half of the book is about fasting, its meaning, how to, restrictions and other questions that may be asked. This book would be good to use at any time in preparation for something - eg, Lent - and is commonly used to start the New Year. Other books do concentrate on the dietary aspects more than the religious ones so i would advise anyone to consider which type of book they really want. Personally i wanted both and i am very impressed by this book. I am going to use it to get closer to God once more having stepped back from religion for almost 3 years. I think it is an excellent way for those who have lost their way spiritually to find a way back. It is well written, concise, clear yet contains a lot of information. If you want a devotional and a diet in one this is the book for you.

Look forward to starting my fast, read the book first and have preparations to do prior, need to make sure I am doing it for the right reasons, and not just to lose a few pounds.

fantastic and enlightening
I am on the last day of an Esther fast which is 3 days without food or water. I feel as though reading this book has brought more insight into the Esther fast than the author of that book did and I believe that my prayers have been answered by coming across this book. I am really looking forward to this fast and will recommend this book to anyone seeking to build their relationship with God.For anyone seeking to compare the two fasts (Esther & Daniel) I wouldn't bother as they are like comparing oranges and apples. If you are new to fasting like I was a few months ago this book and fast will be a fantastic place to start.
